Your Fitzroy Island Day – Hour by Hour
Check-In at Cairns Marina
Check-in opens at 8:45am at Cairns Marina. Travellers have a full hour – until 9:45am – to check in, collect boarding passes, and get oriented. The terminal area is well-equipped and centrally located, so coordinating with hotel transfers from Cairns CBD or Northern Beaches accommodation is straightforward.
Trade tip: For groups staying in Palm Cove or Port Douglas, we can arrange dedicated coach transfers timed to arrive comfortably within the check-in window. Private charter options are also available for incentive groups wanting an exclusive start to the day.
Boarding Commences
Boarding begins at 9:30am. Clients should make their way to the boarding gate promptly – it closes at 10:00am sharp, and there is no flexibility on this. Staff will direct travellers to their seats on the air-conditioned catamaran. The vessel is comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating options.
Trade tip: We can arrange priority boarding and reserved seating for group bookings. Worth flagging to your clients that 10:00am is a hard cut-off. If they miss the gate, they miss the boat – there is no second departure.
Depart Cairns Marina
The catamaran departs Cairns Marina at 10:15am for the 45-minute crossing to Fitzroy Island. It is a sheltered, generally calm ride through the waters between the mainland and the island. Staff on board run through the island layout, activity options, and safety information during the crossing – so clients can plan their day before they step ashore.
Trade tip: The crossing itself is sheltered and generally calm, which matters if you have clients who are anxious about boat travel. Most passengers barely notice the swell.
Arrive Fitzroy Island
The catamaran docks at Fitzroy Island at around 11:00am. A short jetty leads onto the island where the main hub sits – Foxy’s Cafe, the dive shop, equipment hire, and the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre are all within a few minutes’ walk. Travellers collect snorkelling gear and stinger suits here before heading out.
The Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is right by the arrival area. It is a quick but worthwhile stop, especially for families and eco-conscious travellers. Entry is free, and guided Turtle Talk presentations can be added to the itinerary.
Lunch boxes are available for collection from Foxy’s between 11:00am and 2:00pm, giving clients the flexibility to eat whenever it suits them. The picnic lunch is prepared by the Fitzroy Island Resort chefs – a fresh baguette, seasonal salads, a sweet treat, fruit, and a light snack.

Snorkelling, Walks & Island Activities
From here, the day is open. Fitzroy Island’s fringing reef is the main drawcard – travellers can wade in from the beach and be swimming over coral gardens within minutes. No boat transfer to an outer reef needed. The reef supports hard and soft corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and giant clams. Visibility is generally excellent, and the sheltered waters mean conditions are calm for most of the year.
Snorkelling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, buoyancy vest, and protective lycra suit) is included in most package tiers. The crew will advise on conditions and best snorkelling times before clients disembark.
For clients who prefer not to swim, the glass-bottom boat tour offers a way to experience the reef without getting wet. The island also has four walking trails ranging from a gentle 700m Secret Garden loop to the 4.2km Summit Circuit with views across the Coral Sea. Nudey Beach – regularly voted one of Australia’s best – is a short walk from the main hub.
Stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking are available for hire. Some clients will want to do everything. Others will just want to sit somewhere quiet with a cold drink.
Trade tip: Guided snorkel tours, guided kayak tours, and guided rainforest walks with a local naturalist can all be arranged as optional extras. Sea kayak and paddleboard hire can be pre-booked at wholesale rates for groups. For incentive programmes, we can set up beach games and team-building activities on the sand.
Commence Boarding for Return
Boarding for the return ferry commences at 3:15pm. Clients should start making their way back to the jetty from wherever they are on the island – whether that is Nudey Beach, the lighthouse trail, or a final drink at Foxy’s. Equipment needs to be returned before boarding.
Trade tip: It is worth reminding clients that the walk back from Nudey Beach takes about 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. Groups doing the lighthouse or summit trail should plan to be back at the hub well before 3:00pm.
Depart Fitzroy Island
The catamaran departs Fitzroy Island at 3:30pm for the return crossing to Cairns. Another 45 minutes of sheltered water. Most travellers are pleasantly exhausted by this point – it has been a full day of reef, rainforest, and sun.
Arrive Cairns Marina
The catamaran arrives back at Cairns Marina by approximately 4:30pm. Transfers back to CBD hotels or Northern Beaches accommodation can be arranged for a seamless return. Most travellers are back at their hotel by late afternoon, with the evening free for the Cairns Esplanade or night markets.
