Where Two World Heritage Areas Meet
Cairns sits at the intersection of two World Heritage-listed areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. That alone makes it one of the most compelling destinations in Australia. But there is more to it than the headline attractions. Palm Cove, just 25 minutes north, offers a quieter, more refined base with boutique accommodation like The Reef House – an adults-only retreat that has been welcoming guests since 1977. From here, your clients are well placed to access the outer reef, the ancient Daintree, the mountain village of Kuranda, and some genuinely memorable dining.
This four-night itinerary covers the essentials and leaves room for your clients to breathe. It pairs a full-day Great Barrier Reef cruise with Sunlover Reef Cruises to Moore Reef, a guided Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation day tour, and the iconic Kuranda experience via Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda Scenic Railway. A sunset harbour cruise along Trinity Inlet rounds things off. Accommodation is at The Reef House Palm Cove (or similar, subject to availability). There is also the option to swap the outer reef day for a Fitzroy Island trip, add Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, or extend with the Atherton Tablelands, Cooktown, or Lizard Island. It’s designed for agents building Tropical North Queensland FIT itineraries or adding a short-break extension to broader Australian programmes.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Four Nights in Tropical North Queensland – Day by Day
Full-Day Cruise to Moore Reef
The headline experience. Clients board Sunlover Reef Cruises for a full-day voyage to the outer Great Barrier Reef, arriving at a purpose-built pontoon at Moore Reef. The pontoon sits in a natural lagoon with calm, sheltered water – ideal for snorkelling directly off the platform. For clients who prefer to stay dry, there’s a semi-submersible coral viewing tour, a glass bottom boat, and an underwater observatory with fish feeding presentations.
Optional upgrades include a guided snorkel tour, Seawalker helmet diving (no experience needed – clients walk along the ocean floor), introductory or certified SCUBA diving, and scenic helicopter flights over the reef. There is also a 30-metre spiral waterslide and an enclosed ocean pool, which makes the experience work for a broader range of clients than you might expect. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are included on board.
Trade tip: For clients who prefer a more intimate reef experience, we can swap this day for a Fitzroy Island trip with Glass Bottom Boat tour and premium buffet lunch. Fitzroy Island offers a different feel – national park walks, a turtle rehabilitation centre, and snorkelling directly off the beach. Both are excellent; it comes down to whether your clients want the outer reef pontoon experience or a tropical island day. Let us know and we will adjust.

Guided Day Tour Through the World’s Oldest Rainforest
A full-day guided tour heading north from Cairns into the Daintree Rainforest and on to Cape Tribulation – the point where two World Heritage areas meet as the rainforest runs directly down to the reef-fringed coast. This is the only place on earth where that happens.
The day begins with a guided walk through Mossman Gorge, including morning tea at the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre. From there, clients cross the Daintree River by cable ferry and continue north. A one-hour Daintree River cruise is a highlight – crocodile spotting, birdlife, and the chance to see unique plant species explained by expert guides. Lunch is at Heritage Lodge, a beautiful property set among the rainforest canopy overlooking Cooper Creek.
The tour continues to Cape Tribulation for a beach walk and views from Kulki Lookout, before a stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company for exotic fruit ice cream made from locally grown tropical fruits. The return drive includes Alexandra Lookout, with sweeping views over the Daintree River estuary and the Coral Sea beyond.
Trade tip: This is genuinely one of Australia’s great day tours. The landscape is ancient – the Daintree is estimated to be over 135 million years old – and the combination of river cruise, rainforest walk, and coastal scenery gives clients enormous variety in a single day. It works well following the reef day, as the pace is different. The crocodile spotting on the river cruise is always popular.

Skyrail, Scenic Railway & Rainforest Wildlife
A day that combines two iconic Cairns experiences – the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Kuranda Scenic Railway – with the mountain village of Kuranda itself. Getting there is half the experience. The Skyrail glides above the rainforest canopy with stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls stations, where boardwalks take clients into the forest and to lookout points over the spectacular Barron Gorge. The return journey is aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway, winding through tunnels and over bridges built in the 1880s.
In Kuranda, the itinerary includes entry to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary – Australia’s largest butterfly free-flight aviary with over 1,200 butterflies – and Rainforestation Nature Park. At Rainforestation, clients board a World War II-era Army Duck for a guided tour through the rainforest, then visit the Koala and Wildlife Park. The Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience adds an Indigenous cultural dimension with traditional dances and boomerang throwing. An Aussie BBQ lunch is included.
Trade tip: This is a packed but well-paced day. The combination of Skyrail up and Scenic Railway down (or the reverse) means clients experience the rainforest from two completely different perspectives. For wildlife-focused clients, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures can be added as an optional stop on the return route – saltwater crocodiles, cassowaries, koalas, and native species in a natural bushland setting.

Relax at The Reef House, Then Sail Trinity Inlet at Sunset
A deliberately slower day. The morning is free for clients to enjoy The Reef House – the pool, the spa, or a beachside stroll along Palm Cove’s melaleuca-lined foreshore. For those wanting something more active, we can arrange a hot air balloon flight over the Atherton Tablelands at dawn, or a morning visit to Cairns Aquarium.
In the afternoon, clients join a sunset sailing cruise along Trinity Inlet. The cruise takes in views across the Coral Sea, the Cairns skyline, and the surrounding mountain ranges as the light shifts. Drinks and light refreshments are included on board. It is a relaxed, atmospheric way to close out the trip.
Trade tip: We’d recommend discussing this free day with clients before departure so we can tailor it. For food-focused travellers, Cairns and Palm Cove have some outstanding restaurants – NuNu, Ochre, Dundees. For those wanting to get further afield, a half-day Atherton Tablelands food trail or a scenic helicopter flight can be arranged. This flexibility is one of the package’s strengths for FIT bookings.

Transfer to Cairns Airport
A transfer collects clients from The Reef House Palm Cove and delivers them to Cairns Airport for their onward flight. The drive from Palm Cove to the airport takes approximately 30 minutes. Depending on departure time, there may be a chance for a final swim or coffee on the Palm Cove esplanade.
Trade tip: Cairns Airport handles domestic and international flights, making connections straightforward. For agents building broader Australian itineraries, Cairns connects directly to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. This four-night package works well as a Tropical North Queensland standalone or as an add-on to east coast itineraries. For clients wanting more time in the region, we can extend to include the Atherton Tablelands, a Cooktown scenic flight, or a luxury escape to Lizard Island. This itinerary and other Cairns products can also be quoted and booked via our FIT/HELiO booking platform.
