Wild Bush Luxury for the Travel Trade

Bamurru Plains

An immersive safari lodge on the edge of Kakadu, where mesh-walled bungalows on stilts overlook the Mary River floodplains and their extraordinary wildlife. Airboat safaris, open-top game drives, crocodile river cruises, and guided walks through country that feels genuinely untamed. Built for travel agents packaging luxury Australian experiences, incentive programmes, and Fully Independent Traveller (FIT) itineraries that go well beyond the usual.

About This Experience

Bamurru Plains, Top End, Northern Territory

Bamurru Plains sits on the edge of the Mary River floodplains, bordering Kakadu National Park in Australia’s Top End. It’s a landscape of extraordinary density – 236 bird species, saltwater crocodiles, wild buffalo, brumbies, agile wallabies – all visible from the lodge itself. The property spans savannah woodland, black soil floodplains, paperbark swamps, river mangroves, and coastal beaches. That variety of habitat is what makes the wildlife here so remarkable.

The “Wild Bush Luxury” concept is uniquely Australian. Safari bungalows are raised on stilts with mesh walls on three sides, so guests hear, see, and almost touch the environment around them. There’s no wifi, no mobile reception, no television. The alarm clock is the call of magpie geese at dawn. It’s a deliberate disconnection that draws a certain kind of traveller – the kind who values something genuine over something polished. For travel agents building premium Top End itineraries, Bamurru is a standout property that pairs naturally with Kakadu, Arnhem Land, and broader Northern Territory experiences.

  • Safari Bungalows, Kingfisher Suite, and Jabiru Retreat accommodation options
  • All-inclusive – gourmet bush-inspired meals, beverages, and daily guided safaris
  • Airboat safaris, open-top game drives, river cruises, guided walks, and more
  • Access by private charter flight from Darwin
  • Ideal for luxury FIT, honeymoons, small group incentives, and photography experiences

SAFARI ACTIVITIES

Your Bamurru Experience – Day by Day

Airboat Safaris Across the Floodplains

This is Bamurru’s signature experience and there’s really nothing else like it in Australian tourism. Guests skim across the floodplains by airboat, moving from wide open grasslands to a lagoon surrounded by peeling paperbark trees. The rush of speed gives way to silence as the boat drifts to a stop, and suddenly you’re sitting in the middle of a wetland teeming with birdlife, with nothing but the sounds of the bush around you.

The wildlife encounters are up close. Magpie geese in their thousands, jabiru storks, saltwater crocodiles basking on the banks. The airboat accesses parts of the floodplain that are simply unreachable any other way.

Trade tip: The airboat safari is the experience guests remember most. It photographs brilliantly and has that sense of adventure that works particularly well for incentive groups or clients who want something they genuinely cannot get anywhere else. It’s included in the Ultimate Wilderness Experience package.

An airboat with a large fan propeller navigates through shallow wetland waters in a sprawling marsh landscape. A person operates the vessel along a sandy channel surrounded by vast green wetlands under a bright blue sky with scattered white clouds.

Open-Top Game Drives

More akin to an African safari than anything most travellers expect to find in Australia. The open-top vehicles cross savannah woodland and floodplain country, passing agile wallabies, estuarine crocodiles, wild horses, buffalo, and an extraordinary range of birdlife. The guides know the property intimately and tailor each drive to conditions and wildlife movements on the day.

The comparison to Africa is one guests make often – and it’s not a stretch. The density of wildlife here genuinely surprises people.

Trade tip: Game drives work well as the first activity for new arrivals. They give clients a sense of the property’s scale and the variety of habitat. For clients who’ve done African safaris, positioning Bamurru as “Australia’s answer” lands well – it’s different enough to feel fresh but familiar enough to appeal.

Two open-air safari vehicles with canopy roofs travel along a red dirt road through an African savanna landscape, carrying tourists on a guided wildlife viewing expedition. The vehicles are positioned facing each other on the expansive dusty terrain with scattered acacia trees and sparse vegetation typical of savanna ecosystems.

Crocodile Spotting River Cruises

A relaxed meander along Sampan Creek, which is home to countless crocodiles and an even greater number of birds. The riverine habitat is quite different from the open floodplain – mangroves line the banks, barramundi leap from the water, and the light filtering through the paperbark canopy creates something special for photographers.

The guides point out crocodiles at rest on the banks and in the water, and explain the ecology of the Mary River system. It’s a quieter activity than the airboat, but no less impressive.

Trade tip: The river cruise is a good option for clients who prefer a calmer pace or who are keen birders. It showcases a completely different side of the property from the floodplain activities. Works well scheduled in the late afternoon when the light is soft and the wildlife is active.

Two visitors wearing headphones pilot a small airboat through a vast, shallow wetland ecosystem dotted with lily pads and native vegetation. The expansive, flat landscape with scattered aquatic plants and clear blue sky suggests a Florida wetland or similar subtropical marshland environment.

Guided Wilderness Walks

A walking safari at Bamurru is deliberately slow. You’re compelled to notice things you’d miss from a vehicle – the detail of termite mounds, the tracks of wallabies in the red dirt, the call of a blue-winged kookaburra overhead. The guides have deep knowledge of the bush and its interconnected systems, and they share it without lecturing.

At this pace, the Top End reveals itself gradually. It’s the activity that most guests say changed how they think about the Australian landscape.

Trade tip: Don’t overlook this one when briefing clients. It sounds simple but it’s often the most meaningful activity on the programme. Particularly good for travellers who value depth over spectacle.

A diverse group of visitors walks through a tall eucalyptus forest, observing the natural environment with raised arms pointing out features of interest. The scene captures an educational or guided nature tour experience in a woodland setting with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy.

The Hide & Quad Bike Tours

The Hide is a raised observation platform six metres above the ground in the tree canopy, overlooking the Mary River floodplain. It’s the ultimate vantage point for birdwatching and wildlife observation without disturbing the animals below. Guests can also book the exclusive Siesta Lunch Retreat at The Hide – a private safari drive or airboat out to the platform with a chef-prepared picnic hamper and premium wines. Two hours of complete solitude, a bird book, binoculars, and a two-way radio.

For something more active, quad bike tours criss-cross between floodplain savannah, monsoonal forests, and dry open areas dotted with termite mounds. You ride alongside buffalo and brumbies rather than observing from a distance.

Trade tip: The Siesta Lunch at The Hide is a premium add-on that works beautifully for honeymoon clients or as a surprise upgrade for incentive delegates. The quad bikes appeal to a younger, more adventurous traveller and add variety to a multi-night stay.

A person rides an all-terrain vehicle across open, sandy ground beneath towering eucalyptus trees in a sprawling woodland landscape. The scene captures an outdoor adventure activity in a natural, remote setting with clear blue skies.

Kakadu Day Excursion

A short hop by light aircraft from Bamurru brings guests into the heart of Kakadu National Park. Rock art galleries reveal stories of Aboriginal people and their ancient culture spanning tens of thousands of years. The textures, colours, and vistas across savannah woodland and floodplains give a sense of the spirituality of this landscape that’s hard to convey secondhand.

This is a full-day experience and can be combined with the broader Art of Arnhem Land package, which includes a guided visit to Injalak Hill in Oenpelli (Gunbalanya) – home to some of the finest rock art in Western Arnhem Land – and the Injalak Arts and Craft Centre where guests meet local Aboriginal artists.

Trade tip: The Art of Arnhem Land Experience is a 3-night package with set departure dates and a cap of 12 guests. It’s a strong option for clients who want cultural depth alongside the wildlife. The Arnhem Land access is not something most travellers can arrange independently, which makes it a genuine differentiator for your itinerary.

A single-engine aircraft is parked on a remote dirt airstrip in the Australian Kimberley region, surrounded by sparse, dry grassland and eucalyptus woodland. The scene captures the remote nature of outback aviation and exploration in this rugged Australian landscape.

Barramundi Fishing

The Mary River floodplains and their adjoining creek systems are prime barramundi territory. During the wet season, the floodplains fill with water and fish, and the highlight for anglers at Bamurru is fishing out on the floodplains by airboat – a method that’s as much about the experience as the catch.

The creeks of the Mary River System bordering the property offer further fishing opportunities. This isn’t charter fishing in the conventional sense. It’s wading and casting in wild country with a guide who knows every bend of the creek.

Trade tip: Barramundi fishing is a strong add-on for male travellers in couples or small groups who might otherwise sit out a bird-focused safari. It also works for dedicated fishing holidays when combined with other Top End fishing destinations. Contact us for seasonal availability.

A large tarpon fish leaps dramatically out of shallow wetland waters, creating a dynamic splash. The scene captures the fish mid-jump in a scenic natural setting with marsh vegetation and a clear sky, showcasing the excitement of sport fishing in coastal wetlands.

Do Nothing at All

This isn’t filler. Some guests come to Bamurru specifically to switch off. There’s no wifi, no phone signal. The wildlife comes to you – hundreds of birds take flight from around the infinity pool, buffalo roam through camp, wallabies hop past your bungalow. The lodge deck overlooks the floodplains, and during the heat of the day, the pool and a cold drink are all that’s needed.

The self-service bar is open all day. A crisp white wine, a gin and tonic, sparkling water. Best enjoyed with one of Bamurru’s spectacular sunsets, which – without exaggeration – are among the most vivid in Australia.

Trade tip: For clients who are hesitant about a “safari” because they imagine early mornings and packed schedules, the Floodplain Chill Out Package strips back the guided activities and lets guests set their own pace. Activities can be booked locally as they wish. It’s a different sell but it suits a real segment of the luxury market.

Bush-Inspired Dining

Bamurru’s chefs incorporate native and locally sourced produce to create something that’s authentically Australian without trying too hard. Think kangaroo skewers, crispy barramundi with finger lime salsa, quandong ice cream. The philosophy runs through every meal – from wattle seed muffins at breakfast to bush-spiced duck confit at dinner, prepared in the open kitchen while guests watch from the long timber dining table.

Lunch is typically served on the wildlife observation deck overlooking the floodplains. You might be eating a warm chicken salad with roasted macadamia nuts while watching buffalo and brumbies graze through camp. Dinner is a three-course affair hosted by one of the field guides, served as frogs break into their evening serenade. It’s communal and social by design.

Canapes and sundowners happen out in the wilderness during the afternoon activity, or on the lodge deck as the sun drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bamurru Plains is accessed by private charter flight from Darwin. The flight takes around 30 minutes and lands on the property’s own airstrip. There’s no road access during the wet season, and even in the dry season the charter flight is the standard transfer method. We can arrange charter flights as part of the overall itinerary. Guests should plan to arrive in Darwin the night before their Bamurru transfer – we can arrange Darwin accommodation and airport transfers as needed.
The operating season runs roughly from May to October, which is the dry season in Australia’s Top End. During these months the floodplains recede enough to access the property, the weather is warm and dry, and wildlife concentrates around the remaining water sources – which makes for outstanding viewing. The early dry season (May to June) sees the most water on the floodplains and peak birdlife. July and August have the most comfortable temperatures. September and October bring drier conditions and excellent barramundi fishing as the floodplains contract. Each period has its strengths, so timing depends on the client’s priorities.
No particular level of fitness is needed for most activities. The airboat safari, river cruise, and game drives are vehicle-based. Guided walks are at a gentle pace over relatively flat terrain. The quad bike tours require basic coordination but no prior experience. Getting in and out of vehicles and boats is the main physical requirement. Clients with mobility concerns should discuss their situation at booking so we can advise on which activities suit them best.
Yes, with some considerations. The Kingfisher Suite accommodates families of five with swag beds for children, and the Jabiru Retreat can host up to six guests. Children under a certain age may be restricted from some activities – particularly the airboat – so check at time of booking. The property is genuinely remote with no fencing and wild animals including crocodiles, so parents need to be comfortable with that environment. That said, many families find it a transformative experience for children who are old enough to engage with the wildlife and the bush.
Absolutely – and that’s how we typically package it. Bamurru Plains pairs naturally with Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land cultural experiences, Darwin city stays, and Litchfield National Park. For longer itineraries, it connects well with the Kimberley coast, Uluru, and east coast destinations like the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney. We build complete Australian itineraries for the travel trade – flights, accommodation, touring, and transfers across the country. Bamurru works particularly well as the luxury wilderness centrepiece of a Top End circuit or a wider Australian journey.
Yes. The intimate scale of the property makes it well suited to small incentive groups or exclusive buyouts. With only ten Safari Bungalows, the Kingfisher Suite, and Jabiru Retreat, the maximum guest capacity is limited – which is exactly the appeal for corporate clients wanting privacy and exclusivity. We can coordinate exclusive use of the property, tailor the activity programme, and arrange special dining experiences. For larger incentive groups, Bamurru can form one component of a broader Top End programme that we design end to end. Contact us at enquiries@aabh.com.au to discuss group options.
