Tailor-Made FIT Itinerary for the Travel Trade

Ultimate Australian Explorer

A 15-day journey across Australia’s most iconic destinations – from Melbourne’s laneways and the Great Ocean Road to the red earth of Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, and Sydney’s harbour. Built for travel agents packaging comprehensive Fully Independent Traveller (FIT) itineraries that give clients the full sweep of Australia without feeling rushed.

About This Itinerary

Melbourne to Sydney via the Red Centre

This is the itinerary for clients who want Australia done properly. Not a quick skim of the highlights – a genuine 15-day journey that connects five distinct regions into a single coherent trip. Melbourne’s culture and coastal drama. Adelaide’s food scene and the wildlife of Kangaroo Island. The spiritual weight of Uluru under a desert sky. The Great Barrier Reef from the water. And Sydney, where it all wraps up with harbour views and the Blue Mountains on the doorstep.

The Ultimate Australian Explorer is a fully packaged FIT itinerary covering transfers, accommodation, touring, and domestic flights. It’s designed for travel agents building Australian programmes for first-time visitors or clients who want comprehensive coverage without the complexity of piecing it together themselves. Every day has purpose, but there’s breathing room built in. AABH handles the logistics end to end – you sell it, we make it work.

  • 15 days / 14 nights spanning Melbourne, Adelaide, Uluru, Cairns, and Sydney
  • Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island penguins, Kangaroo Island wildlife
  • Field of Light at Uluru, sunrise over Kata Tjuta
  • Full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef with Quicksilver
  • Blue Mountains and Scenic World, Sydney harbour sights, Bondi Beach
An aerial view of Uluru (Ayers Rock), the iconic red sandstone monolith in central Australia's Northern Territory, surrounded by sparse desert vegetation and spinifex grassland under a clear blue sky. The distinctive vertical striations and massive scale of this sacred Aboriginal landmark are prominently displayed against the arid landscape.

COMPLETE ITINERARY

Your Australian Explorer – Day by Day

Arrive in Melbourne & City Sights

Your clients arrive at Melbourne international airport and are transferred to Mantra St Kilda Road, an elegant art deco hotel with spacious serviced apartments, gourmet kitchens, and balconies overlooking Albert Park Lake and the city skyline. It’s a strong base – South Yarra, Chapel Street, St Kilda beach, and the CBD are all within easy reach.

A half-day Melbourne City Sights tour is included. The route takes in Cook’s Cottage, Queen Victoria Market, Fitzroy Gardens, Albert Park (home of the Australian Grand Prix), the Royal Botanic Gardens, Royal Exhibition Buildings, Parliament House, and Federation Square. There’s time at the Shrine of Remembrance and the Southbank waterfront precinct, with commentary covering the city’s architecture including St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Princess and Regent Theatres.

Trade tip: Melbourne is a city that rewards extra time. Clients who arrive a day early can explore the laneway coffee culture, street art, and rooftop bars on their own. The half-day sights tour gives structure without eating up the whole day.

An aerial view of Melbourne's central business district featuring modern skyscrapers and historic architecture, with a lush green park and meandering Yarra River in the foreground. The image captures the contrast between urban development and natural green spaces during autumn, with clear blue skies overhead.

Great Ocean Road & the Twelve Apostles

This full-day tour takes a smart approach – heading inland first to reach Port Campbell National Park and the Twelve Apostles in the morning, before the traditional afternoon crowds arrive. Clients get an unhurried view of the iconic limestone stacks, Loch Ard Gorge, and London Bridge all before lunch.

The afternoon is spent meandering back along the winding Great Ocean Road itself with an experienced driver guide. The coastal scenery is spectacular. The route passes through the Otway Rainforest and charming seaside townships, arriving back in Melbourne by evening.

Trade tip: The reverse-route approach is a genuine advantage here. Most operators run the road west to east and arrive at the Apostles mid-afternoon with everyone else. This itinerary flips that, which makes for better photos and a more relaxed experience at the main attractions.

Dramatic limestone sea stacks rise majestically from the turquoise waters and sandy beach of the Twelve Apostles, an iconic natural formation along Australia's Great Ocean Road. Weathered golden cliffs frame the scene under a partly cloudy sky, showcasing the raw coastal beauty of Victoria's rugged shoreline.

Phillip Island & the Penguin Parade

Morning is at leisure in Melbourne – a chance for your clients to explore independently. The Phillip Island tour departs in the early afternoon, heading 141 km south to the island.

The day includes up-close encounters with Australian wildlife including koalas and kangaroos, a visit to the largest fur seal colony in Australia, and then the main event – the Little Penguins waddling up the beach to their dune burrow homes after a day’s fishing. It’s genuinely charming. The tour departs the hotel at approximately 1pm and returns around 10pm.

Trade tip: This is a late return – make sure clients know they won’t be back until around 10:30pm. It’s worth it though. The penguin parade is one of those uniquely Australian wildlife experiences that works for all ages and interests. A good selling point for families and nature-focused travellers alike.

A group of little penguins (fairy penguins) waddles across sandy beach toward the ocean, with tourists watching from behind a railing in the background. This appears to be a popular penguin viewing experience at a natural wildlife destination.

Fly to Adelaide

Clients transfer to the airport for their flight to Adelaide. On arrival, they’re transferred to the Mercure Grosvenor Hotel Adelaide, a four-star property superbly located opposite the Festival Centre and Casino on North Terrace. The tram stop and Rundle Mall shopping precinct are seconds away, and the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Zoo, and Central Market are all within walking distance.

The remainder of the day is free to explore Adelaide at their own pace. The Central Market alone is worth an hour or two.

Trade tip: Adelaide often surprises clients who don’t expect much. The food and wine scene is outstanding, the city is compact and easy to navigate, and the cultural boulevard along North Terrace has genuine substance. Manage expectations upward – Adelaide delivers.

An aerial photograph of Adelaide's central business district skyline along the Torrens River in South Australia. The image showcases modern high-rise buildings, cultural institutions with distinctive white architectural features, manicured parklands, and the river's curved path through the urban landscape under clear blue skies.

Adelaide City Highlights – Half Day Tour

A morning tour covering Adelaide’s main attractions and points of interest. Clients see the cultural boulevard of North Terrace – the University, Library, Art Gallery, and Museum – along with historic North Adelaide, a visit to St Peters Cathedral (subject to availability), the famous Adelaide Oval, and a Haigh’s Chocolates factory tour with tastings.

On Sundays and South Australian public holidays, the Haigh’s visit is replaced with a stop at the National Wine Centre or further time exploring the city. The afternoon is free.

Trade tip: The Haigh’s Chocolates visit is a nice unexpected touch that clients consistently enjoy. Adelaide Oval is also worth mentioning in your pitch – it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful sporting venues in the world, even for clients who aren’t sports fans.

A stunning twilight view of Adelaide's modern waterfront precinct featuring the illuminated Adelaide Convention Centre, contemporary curved architecture, high-rise hotels, and the Deloitte office tower reflected in calm water. The scene captures the vibrant urban landscape of South Australia's capital city during the blue hour with architectural lighting highlighting the buildings' distinctive designs.

Kangaroo Island Experience

A full-day excursion to South Australia’s premier nature-based tourism destination. The day includes a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis and ferry crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.

Highlights include a guided beach walk at Seal Bay amongst a colony of rare Australian sea lions, a two-course lunch at Vivonne Bay Bistro set in beautiful bushland, koala spotting at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and Flinders Chase National Park with the iconic Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Lunch is included.

Trade tip: Kangaroo Island is one of Australia’s best wildlife experiences and this day tour covers the key highlights efficiently. The Seal Bay walk is the standout – being on the beach amongst wild sea lions is not something clients will have experienced before. It photographs beautifully too.

Massive granite rock formations illuminate in vivid pink and orange hues during sunset on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The distinctive boulder formations, known as the Granite Guardians, create dramatic silhouettes against a colorful twilight sky with purple and pink gradients.

Fly to Uluru & Field of Light Star Pass

Clients transfer from their Adelaide hotel to the airport for their flight to Ayers Rock. On arrival, the resort shuttle takes them to their accommodation.

That evening is the Field of Light Star Pass – a self-guided walk through Bruce Munro’s stunning light installation in the remote desert with majestic views of Uluru. The experience begins with a hotel pick-up and transfer to an exclusive elevated viewing area. A knowledgeable host provides insights into the artist and installation. Guests then explore the field of over 50,000 stems of light under a sky brilliant with stars, before savouring sparkling wine and canapes at the raised viewing area. Duration is approximately 2 hours, departing 30 minutes prior to sunset.

Trade tip: The Field of Light is a powerful first impression of Uluru. Arriving in the afternoon and experiencing this at sunset/nightfall creates an emotional connection to the landscape before the next morning’s sunrise. It works on clients who might be sceptical about “just a rock” – the combination of desert sky, silence, and light tends to convert them quickly.

Uluru (Ayers Rock), the iconic massive red sandstone monolith of the Australian Outback, dominates the landscape under a brilliant blue sky dotted with white cumulus clouds. The distinctive geological formation rises majestically from the surrounding arid plains with sparse vegetation and distinctive red earth.

Uluru Sunrise & Kata Tjuta

An early rise, but well worth it. Clients travel into Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to experience sunrise at Talinguru Nyakunytaku, the dedicated sunrise viewing area. Warming tea, coffee, or hot chocolate is provided as the dawn creeps across the desert plain and lights up Uluru.

Afterwards, the 45 km drive to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) begins, with the driver guide providing an historical overview of the National Park. The panoramic view from the Dune Viewing platform takes in the southern side of Kata Tjuta’s 36 domes, with Uluru visible on the distant horizon. The walk through Walpa Gorge follows a path between two of the tallest domes to a lush oasis – rare plant species and evergreen scrubs tucked away in the heart of the desert.

Trade tip: Kata Tjuta is genuinely underrated. Many clients focus entirely on Uluru, but the Walpa Gorge walk offers a completely different sense of scale and intimacy. The early start means the rest of the day is free – useful for clients who want to explore the resort or simply decompress.

A stunning sunset view of Uluru (Ayers Rock) silhouetted against a golden and purple sky, with vibrant spinifex grassland and red earth in the foreground. The iconic monolith dominates the landscape during golden hour in Australia's Northern Territory.

Fly to Cairns

Today clients fly from Uluru to Cairns – approximately a 3-hour flight. On arrival, they’re transferred to their accommodation. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

The shift from red desert to tropical green is dramatic. Cairns is warm, relaxed, and right on the doorstep of two World Heritage areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest. Both are covered in the days ahead.

Trade tip: The contrast between Uluru and Cairns is one of the itinerary’s strengths. Clients feel like they’ve genuinely travelled to a different country. An afternoon arrival gives time to explore the Cairns Esplanade, grab dinner on the waterfront, and adjust to the humidity before the reef day.

A scenic waterfront promenade in Cairns, Australia, featuring a calm lagoon, palm-lined esplanade with public pool facilities, and modern high-rise residential and commercial buildings reflected in the still water under a clear blue sky.

Outer Reef with Quicksilver

A full day on the Great Barrier Reef. Clients are transferred to Port Douglas for a return wave-piercer cruise to the outer reef. The day includes morning and afternoon tea on board, a reef presentation by a marine biologist, a hot and cold tropical buffet lunch, snorkelling equipment with qualified safety officers, an underwater observatory for fish and coral viewing, coral viewing by semi-submersible vessels, and fish feeding conducted by crew. Lunch is included.

This is the outer reef – not an inner reef platform. The coral quality and marine life visibility are significantly better out here. Quicksilver is a well-established operator with a strong safety record.

Trade tip: For clients who don’t snorkel, the semi-submersible and underwater observatory ensure they still get a genuine reef experience. It’s worth mentioning this to agents selling to older travellers or families with young children. The Port Douglas departure also means clients get to see the coastal drive north – a bonus.

A young snorkeler in a wetsuit makes a peace sign while freediving above vibrant coral formations in the crystal-clear waters of the Great Barrier Reef. The underwater scene showcases diverse coral species and excellent visibility, capturing the beauty and accessibility of this iconic marine destination.

Full Day Kuranda – Skyrail & Scenic Railway

A full day combining two iconic Cairns experiences. Clients ride the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway – 7.5 km over World Heritage listed tropical rainforest canopy in six-person gondola cabins, with stops at an information centre and boardwalk along the way. The journey takes about 90 minutes in one direction. The return trip is by the Kuranda Scenic Railway, a world-famous heritage rail experience through the rainforest mountains dating back to the late 1800s.

In between, there’s time to explore Kuranda Village itself – a laid-back mountain town surrounded by wet tropics rainforest, with markets selling handcrafted goods and Aboriginal artefacts, restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries housed in historic buildings.

Trade tip: The Skyrail/train combination is flexible – clients can go up one way and down the other, whichever they prefer. The Skyrail is genuinely impressive. Gliding metres above the rainforest canopy gives a perspective you simply cannot get on foot. It’s one of those experiences that works for every type of traveller.

A cable car cabin suspended above the lush canopy of Queensland's Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, offering an elevated perspective of the dense tropical rainforest landscape near Cairns.

Fly to Sydney

Morning transfer to Cairns airport for the approximately 3-hour flight to Sydney. On arrival, clients are transferred by private car to their hotel for 3 nights. The remainder of the day is free time.

Sydney needs no introduction, but after the outback and the tropics, arriving into the harbour city feels like a new chapter entirely. The next three days cover the highlights without over-scheduling.

Trade tip: A free afternoon in Sydney on arrival day is well placed. Clients can walk to Circular Quay, see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge on their own terms, and settle into the city before the structured touring begins. It also helps after an early flight from Cairns.

An aerial panoramic view of Sydney's iconic waterfront at dawn, featuring the illuminated Sydney Opera House on the left, the Sydney Harbour Bridge arching across the center, and the city's gleaming CBD skyscrapers bathed in warm golden light. The calm waters of Sydney Harbour reflect the soft colors of the sunrise sky, with residential areas visible beyond.

Sydney Sights including Bondi Beach

A morning sightseeing tour with hotel pick-up. The route takes in city parklands, the harbour front, and South Head for views over the sparkling Pacific Ocean before arriving at Bondi Beach. There’s time to stroll along the sand and soak in the atmosphere of Australia’s most famous beach.

The afternoon is free – ideal for clients to explore further, take a ferry to Manly, or visit the Royal Botanic Gardens and Mrs Macquaries Chair for harbour views.

Trade tip: Bondi is non-negotiable for most international clients. They want the photo. The morning tour gets them there efficiently, and having the afternoon free in Sydney gives flexibility. Some clients will want to do the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk – mention it as an option for those who are keen.

A vibrant aerial view of Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, showcasing the iconic golden sand crescent lined with colorful beachfront buildings, turquoise waves with surfers, and sunbathers scattered across the beach. The scenic coastal suburb rises behind the beach with multi-story apartments and homes, while a grassy park area in the foreground hosts picnickers under a brilliant blue sky.

Blue Mountains & Australian Wildlife including Scenic World

A full-day excursion to the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains – over one million hectares of rainforest, canyons, tall forests, and heathlands. The route climbs through the townships of Blaxland, Lawson, and Wentworth to the famous Three Sisters, with views over the Jamison Valley.

Scenic World is a highlight. The Unlimited Discovery Pass includes the steepest incline railway in the world descending into a hidden valley, the Cableway for panoramic views on the way back up, and the Skyway 270 metres above ancient ravines and waterfalls. At the bottom, a 2.4 km Scenic Walkway winds through Jurassic rainforest. There’s a lunch stop in picturesque Leura village with time to explore its quaint shops and galleries, followed by the scenic Cliff Drive with views of the Megalong Valley. The day finishes with a visit to a wildlife park to encounter koalas, kangaroos, and wombats.

Trade tip: The Blue Mountains day is a strong finish to the touring programme. It combines natural scenery, mild adventure (the railway descent is thrilling without being intimidating), and the wildlife park gives clients a final chance to see koalas and kangaroos before departure. The Leura stop adds a touch of charm that older clients particularly enjoy.

A stunning panoramic view of the iconic Three Sisters rock formation in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, with dramatic sandstone peaks rising above lush eucalyptus forest and distant mountain ridges under a partly cloudy sky.

Depart Sydney

Transfer from the hotel to Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport for departure. The itinerary ends as it began – with a seamless transfer handled by AABH.

Trade tip: For clients with a late flight, we can arrange additional experiences on this final day – a harbour bridge climb, a morning at the Sydney Fish Markets, or a private harbour cruise. Contact us to discuss extensions. This itinerary also pairs well with add-ons to Tropical North Queensland (Daintree), Tasmania, or across the Tasman to New Zealand via our subsidiary New Zealand and Beyond Holidays (NZABH).

A spectacular nighttime view of Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge illuminated during New Year's Eve celebrations, with vibrant fireworks exploding above the bridge and the illuminated Sydney Opera House visible below. Colourful boats dot the harbour waters as the city celebrates with spectacular pyrotechnics reflecting across the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. The Ultimate Australian Explorer is a template, not a fixed product. We can adjust the duration, swap out destinations, upgrade accommodation, add experiences, or remove days to suit your client’s interests and budget. Want to add the Daintree Rainforest after Cairns? Drop Adelaide and extend time in Sydney? Add a New Zealand leg via our subsidiary NZABH? All straightforward. Our team builds tailor-made FIT itineraries every day – just tell us what your client needs and we’ll put together a revised programme with trade rates.
This itinerary is suitable for most fitness levels. The touring is primarily coach-based with guided walks at each destination. The most physically active elements are the Walpa Gorge walk at Kata Tjuta, the Scenic World walkway in the Blue Mountains (2.4 km through rainforest), and getting in and out of the reef boat. None of these require significant fitness. Clients with mobility concerns should let us know at the time of booking – we can suggest alternatives for specific activities or adjust the pace of the programme.
Four domestic flights are included in the itinerary: Melbourne to Adelaide, Adelaide to Ayers Rock (Uluru), Uluru to Cairns, and Cairns to Sydney. We handle all domestic flight bookings and ensure connections work with the touring schedule. Flight times and routing may vary by season and carrier availability. We’ll confirm specific schedules at the time of booking and ensure adequate connection times between transfers and flights.
The itinerary is designed as an FIT programme, but it absolutely works as a foundation for small group or incentive travel. We can coordinate the same routing for groups, add exclusive experiences (private dining, VIP access, team-building activities), and handle all group logistics including meet-and-greet services and on-ground coordination. For larger groups or Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) programmes, our dedicated team can build a bespoke version of this itinerary. Contact us at enquiries@aabh.com.au to discuss group requirements.
This itinerary works year-round, but there are seasonal considerations worth noting. The Red Centre (Uluru) is best from April to October when temperatures are comfortable – summer months can exceed 40 degrees. The Great Barrier Reef is accessible year-round, though June to October offers the best visibility. Melbourne and Sydney are pleasant in most seasons, with autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) offering the most reliably mild conditions. Adelaide is ideal in autumn when the wine regions are at their best. We can advise on the optimal timing for your specific clients.
A stunning twilight view of Brisbane's modern city skyline reflecting in the Brisbane River, featuring the iconic Story Bridge, contemporary high-rise buildings illuminated against a vibrant purple and blue sky, with historic riverside landmarks in the foreground including a lighthouse and heritage structures.
