Tailor-Made FIT Itinerary for the Travel Trade

Australian East Coast 22 Day Odyssey

A 22-day fly, drive, fly itinerary spanning Cairns to Sydney – from the ancient Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef through the Sunshine Coast’s golden beaches to the harbour city itself. Built for travel agents packaging immersive Australian east coast experiences for Fully Independent Travellers (FIT) who want time to actually settle in, not just pass through.

About This Itinerary

Cairns to Sydney – Australia’s East Coast

Australia’s east coast is the journey most international travellers dream about, and for good reason. This 22-day itinerary covers the stretch from tropical Far North Queensland to cosmopolitan Sydney, threading together three of the country’s most celebrated regions: the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef, the Sunshine Coast, and Sydney Harbour.

What makes this Australia and Beyond Holidays (AABH) itinerary different from the typical east coast package is the pace. Five nights on Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Six nights in Noosa. Four nights in Sydney. Your clients actually have time to unwind, explore at their own pace, and discover things that a two-night stopover never allows. The fly, drive, fly format keeps the logistics simple – flights between Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, a rental car for the self-drive leg through to Sydney, and seamless transfers at each end. Designed for travel agents building premium FIT programmes where the experience matters more than ticking boxes.

  • 22 days / 21 nights – Cairns to Sydney fly, drive, fly
  • 3 nights Daintree Eco Lodge in the World Heritage rainforest
  • 5 nights on Green Island – Great Barrier Reef coral cay resort
  • 6 nights in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast with self-drive flexibility
  • 4 nights in Sydney with leisure days to explore at will
  • Ideal for couples, families, and FIT travellers seeking an unhurried Australian experience
A serene tropical beach scene featuring a tree-lined promenade of towering palm trees creating natural shade pathways along the sandy shore. The calm turquoise waters and distant forested island create a peaceful, idyllic tropical vacation setting with hammocks and loungers nestled beneath the palms.

COMPLETE ITINERARY

Your East Coast Odyssey – Day by Day

Arrive in Cairns & Transfer to Daintree Eco Lodge

Your clients arrive at Cairns Airport and are transferred to the Daintree Eco Lodge – roughly 90 minutes north through sugar cane country and into the rainforest. The lodge sits in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest, the only boutique accommodation actually within the rainforest itself. Fifteen eco-friendly bayans are nestled among ancient trees, each designed to immerse guests in the surrounding wilderness without compromising on comfort.

The Daintree Rainforest is estimated to be over 165 million years old – significantly older than the Amazon. The 1,200 square kilometres of tropical rainforest is home to tens of thousands of species, many found nowhere else on earth. Guests wake to birdsong from the canopy above. There’s a private waterfall on the property, reached by a leisurely walk through the forest.

Trade tip: The Daintree Eco Lodge is a genuine boutique property – just 15 rooms. It books out, particularly in peak season. Secure allocation early. The transfer from Cairns is scenic but long enough that clients arriving on late flights may prefer an overnight in Cairns first. We can arrange that.

A winding wooden boardwalk with railings traverses through a lush, dense tropical rainforest canopy. Tall trees tower overhead with vibrant green foliage, ferns, and understory vegetation creating a verdant natural environment ideal for eco-tourism and nature exploration.
An aerial panorama of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, Australia, showcasing the iconic white silica sand beach with turquoise lagoons, surrounding rainforest-covered hills, and numerous small islands dotting the sapphire waters of the Coral Sea.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures

A full day at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, one of Far North Queensland’s best wildlife experiences. The Daintree River is home to approximately 70 adult crocodiles, the longest reaching around 5 metres. Guests can take a crocodile cruise to see these animals in their natural habitat and learn about the ecology of the river system.

Beyond the crocs, there’s a one-hour interactive guided tour with the mammal keepers. Guests get to feed and hold Australian marsupials – wallabies, squirrel gliders, wombats, and quolls. It’s hands-on in a way that surprises people who expect a more passive zoo experience.

Trade tip: This day works well for families and couples alike. The crocodile cruise is the highlight for most, but the marsupial encounters are what guests tend to talk about afterwards. It’s a solid wildlife day that doesn’t require much physical effort – a nice counterpoint to the more active rainforest days either side of it.

A saltwater crocodile rests on muddy ground at the water's edge of a lagoon environment, with aquatic vegetation and lily pads visible in the shallow water. The crocodile's scaly body and distinctive tail are clearly visible as it basks near the marshy shoreline.
Two paddleboarders enjoy crystal-clear turquoise waters off a pristine tropical beach, with lush green mangrove forest lining the shore and rocky outcrops visible in the shallow lagoon. The scene captures the natural beauty and water sports activities available in this idyllic destination.

Daintree Eco Lodge – Explore the Rainforest

A free day at the lodge with a range of optional activities available. The Daintree is a magnet for birdwatchers – the number of endemic species in Far North Queensland draws enthusiasts from around the world. Guests can explore the property, visit the onsite waterfall again, or venture further afield.

Optional activities include cultural 4WD tours with local Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal guides, Daintree River cruises, guided rainforest walks ranging from 90 minutes to half a day, 4WD adventures to Cape Tribulation, and Indigenous art workshops where guests learn about ochre painting techniques and traditional stories. The rainforest features some remarkable trees – the ancient Bull Kauri reaches 44.2 metres, the tallest in the Daintree, while fragrant Ylang Ylang trees perfume the air and strangler figs wind throughout the canopy.

Trade tip: The cultural 4WD tours are the standout optional here. A local Aboriginal guide takes guests through Country, sharing the relationship between the Kuku Yalanji people and the environment. It adds real depth to the Daintree experience. We can pre-book any of these activities on behalf of your clients.

A massive strangler fig tree with characteristic buttress roots dominates this lush rainforest scene in Mossman Gorge, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, ferns, and understory plants covered in vibrant green moss and lichen.
A pristine tropical beach featuring golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters with gentle waves, and a dramatic rocky headland covered in lush green vegetation and scattered trees. The scenic landscape includes large boulders along the shoreline and power lines visible on the hilltop, characteristic of a popular island destination.
An aerial photograph of Surfers Paradise on Australia's Gold Coast, showing a pristine sandy beach stretching along a modern high-rise skyline with turquoise ocean waters and white-capped waves. The image captures the contrast between the natural coastal environment and the dense urban development characteristic of this popular vacation destination.

Transfer to Green Island Resort – Great Barrier Reef

Guests are transferred to the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal for their catamaran cruise to Green Island with Great Adventures. The island sits 27 kilometres east of Cairns – a 45-minute boat ride to a coral cay that feels a world away from everything.

Green Island Resort is one of the most unique accommodation locations in Australia. It’s the only rainforest-covered coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, and the resort sits right in the middle of it. On arrival, the resort team greets guests at the jetty, provides a short island orientation tour, then checks them into their suite. Luggage is delivered to the room.

The five-night package includes return catamaran transfers, complimentary sunset drinks, glass bottom boat tours, rainforest walks, guided evening nature walks, fish feeding presentations, snorkelling equipment, and most non-motorised beach activities – kayaking, windsurfing, beach volleyball. Once settled, the island is theirs.

Trade tip: Catamaran transfers from Cairns depart at 08:30, 10:30, and 13:00. Luggage restrictions apply – confirm details at time of booking. Five nights on Green Island is generous by east coast standards, but that’s the point of this itinerary. It gives clients time to properly experience the reef rather than rushing through on a day trip.

A snorkeler in bright blue swim shorts and yellow fins swims alongside a large sea turtle over a vibrant coral reef teeming with diverse coral formations. The crystal-clear turquoise water and thriving underwater ecosystem showcase an incredible marine biodiversity encounter.
A stunning twilight view of Sydney's iconic skyline featuring illuminated skyscrapers, the distinctive Sydney Opera House on the left, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge spanning across the harbor. The scene captures the vibrant cityscape at dusk with warm golden and purple hues reflecting off the calm harbor waters.

Green Island – Great Barrier Reef at Your Own Pace

Four days at leisure on Green Island. The reef surrounding the island supports a remarkable range of marine life – over 190 types of hard corals, more than 100 types of soft corals, and seagrass beds where juvenile fish shelter alongside sea turtles and dugong.

Guests can snorkel directly from the beach, take a glass bottom boat tour, or simply explore the island on foot. A 45-minute walking track circles the cay through 120 species of plant life and a vibrant array of resident birdlife. Self-guided eco walk booklets are available, or guests can join the resident Activities Officer at 15:00 for a guided stroll along the boardwalk – no two walks are ever quite the same.

The Beach Hire Hut provides complimentary equipment for house guests: windsurfing gear (Green Island has hosted the Australian Windsurfing Championship), canoes, kayaks, sun lounges, and umbrellas. For those who want to do nothing at all, that’s entirely the point. Pass the day on the beach. Read a book. Watch the reef from the shore.

Trade tip: Green Island suits clients who appreciate having nowhere to be. It’s not a party island or a resort complex – it’s quiet, natural, and intimate. Position it as the reef experience for travellers who want to slow down. The daily breakfast inclusion and complimentary activities mean clients feel well looked after without constant add-on costs.

A picturesque wooden pier extends into crystal-clear turquoise waters toward a lush, forested island under a bright blue sky with white clouds. The scene captures a pristine tropical destination with moored boats and a sandy beach visible along the island's shoreline.

Green Island to Cairns, Fly to Maroochydore, Drive to Noosa

Checkout day on Green Island, though guests can still use the resort’s shower facilities and the Coral Cay Guest Lounge right up until their departure boat. Catamaran transfers leave the island at various times through the day – the late boat at 16:30 lets clients squeeze every last hour from the reef.

From the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, guests are transferred to Cairns Airport for their flight to Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast. On arrival, they collect their rental car. Noosa is less than an hour’s drive north – an easy, scenic run along the coast.

Noosa needs little introduction. A world-class surfing destination blessed with beautiful sandy beaches and lush green hinterland. Guests check into the Mantra French Quarter, situated in the heart of Noosa with Hastings Street quite literally on the doorstep. This is home for the next six nights.

Trade tip: The self-drive leg starts here. The rental car gives clients freedom to explore Noosa, the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and later the drive south to the Gold Coast and on to Sydney. We arrange the car hire through our supplier network at wholesale rates – confirm vehicle class at booking.

Stunning aerial photograph of Noosa Heads on Queensland's north shore, showcasing the pristine river entrance with turquoise waters, sandy sandbars, lush coastal vegetation, and waterfront residences. The image captures the natural beauty of this popular Australian coastal destination with its distinctive beach formations and waterways.

Noosa & the Sunshine Coast

Five full days at leisure in Noosa (guests arrive on the evening of Day 9, giving six nights in total). The Mantra French Quarter wraps around a meandering lagoon pool with heated spa pools, a sauna, kids’ pool, and new poolside decks – a tranquil base between adventures.

There’s no shortage of things to do. Hire a bike and explore nearby Noosaville. Cruise the Noosa River by hire boat or catch the Noosa Ferry. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is dotted with charming villages and popular markets – the Eumundi Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays are a highlight, with arts and crafts, fresh produce, and speciality fare bringing the hinterland village to life.

Day trip options are strong. Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, begins just off the tip of the Sunshine Coast – 4WD day tours are available. Australia Zoo draws visitors from around the world with its croc shows and conservation programmes. Sea Life Mooloolaba is Queensland’s largest oceanarium with over 5,500 sea creatures across four levels. The Buderim Ginger Factory offers tastings, tours, and a cooking school.

Trade tip: Six nights in Noosa is a selling point, not a hard sell. International travellers often underestimate how much there is to do on the Sunshine Coast. Position Noosa as the place where your clients will feel most like a local – morning swims at the beach, long lunches on Hastings Street, market mornings in the hinterland. We can pre-book day tours to Fraser Island and Australia Zoo to save clients the hassle of organising themselves.

An aerial photograph of Noosa Heads main beach in Queensland, Australia, showing pristine golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush green bushland of Noosa National Park. The image captures the beach's crescent shape with residential development nestled among dense coastal vegetation, creating a striking contrast between natural landscape and modern settlement.

Self-Drive to Gold Coast & Free Days

Guests drive south from Noosa to the Gold Coast – a comfortable couple of hours down the highway. The Gold Coast offers a different energy to the Sunshine Coast. Theme parks, surf beaches, nightlife, and the rainforest-clad hinterland all within reach.

Three nights here with two full free days. Accommodation is recommended based on client preferences and budget. Clients can choose their own pace – Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamborine Mountain, or simply the beach. The Gold Coast suits a range of traveller types, from families after theme park days to couples who prefer the quieter southern beaches and hinterland dining.

Trade tip: The Gold Coast is flexible by design. Some clients will want theme park tickets pre-booked; others will want restaurant recommendations and nothing more. We can tailor this segment to the client. For premium travellers, steer them toward Burleigh Heads and the hinterland rather than the Surfers Paradise strip.

An aerial photograph of the Gold Coast in Australia, showcasing a stunning stretch of golden sandy beach lined with high-rise residential and hotel towers, turquoise waters, and rolling green hinterland in the background under a brilliant blue sky with scattered white clouds.

Fly to Sydney & Days at Leisure

Guests drop off the rental car and fly from the Gold Coast to Sydney. Four nights in Australia’s harbour city, with accommodation tailored to client preferences and budget, and three full days at leisure to explore.

Sydney barely needs selling, but the key here is that clients have enough time to go beyond the Opera House photo and the Harbour Bridge walk. Three full days means they can visit Bondi, take a ferry to Manly, explore The Rocks, wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens, catch a show, or take a day trip to the Blue Mountains. The city reveals itself over time in a way that a single overnight never allows.

Trade tip: We can arrange guided touring in Sydney, harbour cruises, Blue Mountains day trips, or leave it entirely at leisure depending on the client profile. Most international travellers appreciate at least one guided experience in Sydney to get their bearings, then free time after that. We’ll recommend accommodation based on your client’s preferences and budget.

An iconic twilight view of Sydney Harbour featuring the illuminated Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the city skyline glowing in the background and calm blue water reflecting the lights during the magical purple and blue hour.

Depart Sydney

The itinerary concludes with departure from Sydney. Depending on flight times, there may be time for a final morning walk along the harbour foreshore or a last coffee in a neighbourhood café before transfer to Sydney Airport.

Trade tip: For clients with later departure flights, we can arrange a late checkout or a half-day guided experience – the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is popular, or a private food tour through inner-city neighbourhoods. This itinerary also pairs well with extensions to the Red Centre (Uluru and Alice Springs), Melbourne, or onward to New Zealand through our subsidiary, New Zealand and Beyond Holidays (NZABH). Frequently Asked Questions

The east coast of Australia is a year-round destination, but conditions vary. For Far North Queensland (Cairns, Daintree, Great Barrier Reef), the dry season from May to October offers the most comfortable weather – warm days, low humidity, and minimal rainfall. The wet season from November to April brings heat, humidity, and occasional cyclones, though it’s also when the rainforest is at its most lush. The Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast enjoy a subtropical climate and are pleasant throughout the year, though winter (June to August) is cooler. Sydney is best from September to November (spring) and March to May (autumn). We recommend discussing timing with our team so we can advise based on your clients’ preferences.
Absolutely. This is a sample itinerary designed to showcase what’s possible. Every element can be adjusted. Want to swap Green Island for a liveaboard reef experience? Add a Whitsundays stopover? Extend the Sydney stay or add the Blue Mountains? Shorten the Noosa leg and add Byron Bay? We build tailor-made FIT itineraries every day – this is what we do. The accommodation can be upgraded or changed, flights adjusted, and optional day tours pre-booked to suit. Contact us at enquiries@aabh.com.au with your client brief and we’ll put together a customised proposal.
The self-drive leg runs from Maroochydore (Sunshine Coast) through to the Gold Coast, covering the Noosa and Gold Coast portions of the itinerary. A rental car gives clients the freedom to explore the Sunshine Coast hinterland, visit attractions like Australia Zoo and the Eumundi Markets, and drive at their own pace down to the Gold Coast. For clients who prefer not to drive, we can arrange private transfers and day tours instead – though a car does make this section significantly more flexible. We source rental cars through our wholesale partners at competitive trade rates.
This itinerary covers the ground arrangements and domestic flights only. International flights into Cairns and out of Sydney (or the reverse) are quoted separately and can be arranged through AABH or your preferred airline partner. Cairns receives direct international flights from several Asian gateway cities. Sydney connects to virtually everywhere. We’re happy to advise on routing and can quote international airfares on request.
Very well. The pace is deliberately unhurried, which suits families with children far better than the typical sprint down the coast. Green Island is a natural playground – snorkelling, kayaking, beach time, guided nature walks – and the Mantra French Quarter in Noosa has family-friendly apartment-style accommodation with a pool and kids’ facilities. The Gold Coast offers theme parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Sydney has plenty for all ages. We can adjust room configurations, add family-specific activities, and recommend age-appropriate experiences. Just let us know the ages of the children when you enquire.
That’s where the real value of working with AABH comes in. The east coast itinerary pairs naturally with the Red Centre (Uluru, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon), Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, or Tasmania. For clients continuing to New Zealand, our fully owned subsidiary New Zealand and Beyond Holidays (NZABH) operates from Auckland and can seamlessly extend the journey across the Tasman. We build end-to-end programmes – one point of contact, one set of trade rates, complete itinerary management from Cairns to Queenstown and everywhere in between.
A stunning twilight view of Brisbane's modern city skyline reflecting in the Brisbane River, featuring the iconic Story Bridge, contemporary high-rise buildings illuminated against a vibrant purple and blue sky, with historic riverside landmarks in the foreground including a lighthouse and heritage structures.
