Beyond Melbourne, Victoria
Most international travellers know Melbourne for its laneways, food scene, and sport. What they don’t know – and what makes the difference in a well-built itinerary – is that four remarkable regions sit within 90 minutes of the CBD. The Bellarine Peninsula. The Mornington Peninsula. Phillip Island. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. Each one is distinct. Travelling between them is effortless.
Go Beyond Melbourne is a collection of ready-made itinerary frameworks designed for the travel trade. We’ve built three themed programmes – Family Fun, Romantic Indulgence, and Wildlife and Adventure – each running five days and covering different combinations of these regions. They work as standalone touring or as extensions to a broader Australian itinerary. Every experience, accommodation recommendation, and route has been tested. For travel agents building tailor-made Victorian programmes, these are your starting point.

FIVE-DAY ITINERARY
Family Fun – Day by Day
Geelong Waterfront & Bellarine Peninsula
The itinerary starts in Geelong, Victoria’s second largest city and just 1.5 hours from Melbourne. Families spend the morning exploring the Baywalk Bollard Trail – over 100 colourful sculptures along the waterfront from Limeburners Point to Rippleside Park, each depicting an iconic figure from Geelong’s history. There’s a Koori family, explorer Matthew Flinders, groups of lifeguards. The Geelong Arts and Culture Trails App provides a mapped guide with photos and background on each bollard.
From there, visit the National Wool Museum, housed in an 1872 bluestone woolstore along the waterfront precinct. It tells the Australian story of wool, fibre, and textiles with guided tours and behind-the-scenes “Up Close with the Collection” sessions. For something more adventurous, Portarlington Mussel Tours offers Australia’s only mussel tour – an immersive seafood experience cruising on Port Phillip Bay where families can collect their own mussels from the farms and enjoy cooking demonstrations for lunch.
Sea All Dolphin Swims offers a 3.5-hour Seal and Dolphin Swim to encounter wild dolphins, seals, and stingrays, with onboard adventure activities. They also run a 2-hour Seal Adventure Swim and a 90-minute Ocean Wildlife Sightseeing tour featuring dolphins, penguins, and more. Wander the seaside towns of Point Lonsdale, Barwon Heads, and Queenscliff before settling into overnight accommodation at the BIG4 Beacon Resort, complete with indoor heated pool and indoor fun room.
Trade tip: Geelong is often skipped by international itineraries, which is a missed opportunity. The Bollard Trail is free and keeps younger children engaged. The mussel tour and dolphin swim are bookable experiences that add real value to a family day. Accommodation at BIG4 Beacon Resort suits families well with its on-site facilities.

Queenscliff Ferry & Mornington Peninsula Adventures
Take the Searoad Ferries from Queenscliff to Sorrento – a 40-minute crossing where families should keep watch for dolphins and seals. You can drive around the bay as an alternative, but the ferry is the experience.
Once on the Mornington Peninsula, head to Rocky Creek Strawberry Farm for seasonal fruit picking, then on to the Enchanted Adventure Garden. This award-winning attraction sits across 25 acres in the hinterland of Arthurs Seat. Five mazes including the Top Hedge Maze. Giant brainteaser puzzles. Tube slides. The MisAdventure Voyage playground – a steampunk-inspired shipwreck adventure crafted from a real 1800s vessel, complete with historical artefacts. The Canopy Walk is elevated through the treetops of a 100-year-old remnant eucalypt forest and is pram-friendly. For older children and adults, Tree Surfing is the headline – a high ropes adventure with aerial obstacles, bridges, and ziplines up to 10 metres above the ground. The Sky Scramble play area is designed specifically for younger children.
Don’t miss the Arthurs Seat Eagle – a gondola ride offering panoramic views across Port Phillip Bay and the Peninsula hinterland. Then spend time at the calm bay beaches, home to Victoria’s iconic colourful beach boxes. Overnight at Carmel at Sorrento or Peppers Moonah Links.
Trade tip: The Enchanted Adventure Garden can easily fill half a day for families. The combination of gentle activities for small children (Canopy Walk, Sky Scramble) and genuine thrills for older kids (Tree Surfing, Tube Slides) makes it work across a wide age range. The Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola is a quick add-on that gives great photography opportunities.

Moonlit Sanctuary & Phillip Island Wildlife
Head around Western Port Bay toward Phillip Island, stopping first at Moonlit Sanctuary – Melbourne’s award-winning wildlife park, located at the top of the Mornington Peninsula and directly en route. Over 70 Australian species live here, including endangered animals. Families can hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies, cuddle koalas, and encounter colourful birds, reptiles, playful dingoes, and more. The bushland setting makes it feel intimate rather than zoo-like.
Maru Animal and Koala Park is another option along the way. At noon, stop at the beach in San Remo where the fish co-op feeds the pelicans – it’s a genuine spectacle that children love.
Crossing onto Phillip Island, stop at Churchill Island to see working farm activities at this first farmed site in Victoria. Visit the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory for a tour and hands-on chocolate making. A Maze’N Things is full of mental tests and games for all ages. Directly across the road, the Koala Conservation Centre has boardwalks into the treetops for close interaction with koalas. Cruise with Wildlife Coast Cruises or the Wild Ocean Ecoboat to Seal Rocks to see the 30,000-strong colony of Australian fur seals.
The day finishes with the Penguin Parade at sunset. The Penguins Plus upgrade gives ranger commentary and access to an underground viewing area at penguin eye height. Overnight at Phillip Island Apartments in Cowes.
Trade tip: This is a packed day. If clients prefer a slower pace, split it across two days and add an overnight on Phillip Island. The Penguin Parade is the non-negotiable highlight – always book the Penguins Plus upgrade for international travellers. The underground viewing makes a real difference to the experience.

Phillip Island Morning & Dandenong Ranges
Start the morning at Beach HQ Restaurant and Bar in Cowes, overlooking Cowes jetty. For families wanting more island time, Naturaliste Tours offers sea journeys to explore the wilderness of French Island – a genuinely off-the-beaten-track experience.
Then head to the Nobbies Centre for the Antarctic Journey, where families come face to face with orcas and seals through 3D virtual reality. It’s goodbye to the island after that.
The journey north takes you through the Dandenong Ranges. Take a ride on Puffing Billy, the century-old steam train – one of Melbourne’s most iconic experiences. Feed native birds at Grants Reserve, or visit the beautiful national parks in these ranges. If travelling in September or October, the Tesselaar Tulip Festival is unmissable – fields upon fields of colour. Pick seasonal fruit at Rayners Orchard (peaches, nectarines, feijoas, guavas) before heading to overnight accommodation in the Yarra Valley at Balgownie Estate.
Trade tip: Puffing Billy alone justifies the stop in the Dandenongs. International families consistently rate it as a trip highlight. The orchard visits are seasonal but add a tactile, hands-on element that works particularly well for younger travellers. The Tesselaar Tulip Festival is seasonal (September/October) – check dates when building itineraries.

Yarra Valley & Warburton Adventures
Two options for the final day, depending on client interests. For families after adventure, head to Warburton – roughly two hours from Phillip Island. Warburton Adventure Company offers professionally guided soft adventure experiences in the Upper Yarra Valley. River sledging on gentle to exhilarating rapids. Mountain biking through ancient forests. Abseiling with stunning valley views. Guided walks in the serene Redwood forest. Foraging tours that explore the edible offerings of the local ecosystem. It’s genuine outdoor adventure in a spectacular setting.
Alternatively, spend the day at Healesville Sanctuary for some of the most educational and inspiring wildlife shows in Australia – Spirits of the Sky (dedicated to Australian birdlife) and Tales from Platypus Creek. The Magic Moment encounters let families get up close with native wildlife, and the Wildlife Hospital showcases the rehabilitation work done by staff and volunteers.
In winter, Lake Mountain is just 40 minutes from the Valley for snow play. At any time of year, stop for lunch at Meletos for the Valley’s best pizza. Then head back into Melbourne – just 45 minutes away.
Trade tip: Warburton Adventure Company is a newer product and relatively unknown to international agents. It’s a strong option for active families with older children. Healesville Sanctuary is the safer bet for mixed-age groups. Either way, the Yarra Valley is close enough to Melbourne that clients can have a full day of activities and still make an evening flight if needed.

FIVE-DAY ITINERARY
Romantic Indulgence – Day by Day
Jack Rabbit Vineyard & the Bellarine to Mornington Crossing
Start with lunch at Jack Rabbit Vineyard, overlooking Corio Bay on the Bellarine Peninsula – just 1.5 hours from Melbourne. The views alone set the tone. Stretch your legs on one of the surf beaches, or explore the villages of Barwon Heads, Point Lonsdale, and Queenscliff for boutique shopping, cafes, and providores.
Catch a late ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula. Keep an eye out for dolphins during the crossing. Then make your way directly to Big Blue Backyard, a boutique B&B nestled in the dunes of St Andrews Beach. Book dinner on-site – Paul and Lisa, the owners, bring a meal direct to your suite for a quiet night in.
Trade tip: The ferry crossing from Queenscliff to Sorrento is a selling point in itself. It connects the two peninsulas without the long drive around Port Phillip Bay and gives couples that sense of journey. Big Blue Backyard is a genuinely boutique property – not something most international travellers would find on their own. It adds a personal touch that packaged accommodation can’t match.
Mornington Peninsula Wine, Food & Peninsula Hot Springs
A five-minute ramble through the dunes gets you to St Andrews Beach for a morning walk. Then head into the hinterland for a day of wine, food, and indulgence. Schedule lunch at Montalto Vineyard and Olive Grove – stunning setting, and the sculpture park is worth wandering through. Taste more of the Peninsula’s wines at nearby Red Hill Winery and T’Gallant.
Visit the famous beach boxes at Dromana, Mornington, or Mt Martha. Pick up something for home at the Red Hill Market or vintage stores in the villages of Red Hill and Flinders.
The afternoon belongs to Peninsula Hot Springs. A massage, a soak in a private bath of geothermally heated mineral water, and sunset from the hilltop pool with a 360-degree view of the Peninsula. Choose a dining option for tonight – Paringa Estate or The Long Table – and be sure to allow time for an outdoor bath or shower at Big Blue Backyard, surrounded by candles.
Trade tip: Peninsula Hot Springs is the anchor experience of this day. It books out, especially for private bathing and massage, so lock it in early. The combination of wine touring and hot springs in a single day is extremely appealing to international couples. This sells particularly well to UK, USA, and Asian markets.

Phillip Island Wildlife, Cape Kitchen & the Penguin Parade
Continue around Western Port Bay to Phillip Island. Stop at the Koala Conservation Centre and take the boardwalk to treetop level for a close encounter. For a hit of adrenaline, cruise with the Wild Ocean EcoBoat to Seal Rocks and watch thousands of Australian fur seals frolic and wave from the water.
Lunch at Cape Kitchen is recommended – stunning vistas of the Southern Ocean and fresh local produce. For a view of the island you’ll remember, take to the skies with Phillip Island Helicopters.
Check in early to Glen Isla House or Oak Tree Lodge and relax before the legendary Penguin Parade at sunset. The Ultimate Tour puts couples on a private beach with just 10 guests. Or the Penguins Plus area offers close-up viewing as the little penguins make their way home to their nests.
Trade tip: The Ultimate Tour at the Penguin Parade is the must-book upgrade for couples. Just 10 guests on a private beach with a ranger – it’s intimate, special, and sells out. Phillip Island Helicopters adds that wow factor for milestone celebrations. Glen Isla House is the more boutique accommodation option if clients want character.

Dandenong Ranges Villages & Yarra Valley Wine Country
Head north to the Dandenong Ranges and spend time wandering through the villages of Sassafras and Olinda. Stroll through the giant Mountain Ash forest, or pick berries as you wind your way toward the Yarra Valley. The Dandenongs are home to beautiful national parks and gardens, plus the Tesselaar Tulip Festival in September – plenty of opportunities for fresh air and inspiration.
Arrive in the Yarra Valley in time for a late lunch at TarraWarra Estate, followed by their stunning art gallery. This evening, relax and indulge at Chateau Yering. Stay on-site for dinner in Eleonore’s Restaurant.
Trade tip: Chateau Yering is the premium accommodation option in the Yarra Valley and lifts the entire itinerary. TarraWarra Estate’s gallery is a genuine cultural highlight that appeals to couples who want more than just wineries. The Dandenongs-to-Yarra-Valley drive is scenic and straightforward, making the transition between regions feel effortless.

Sunrise Balloon Flight & Healesville Sanctuary
What better way to close a romantic journey than a hot-air balloon ride over the Yarra Valley at sunrise? Vineyards and farms coming to life below, followed by a champagne breakfast. It’s the kind of experience clients talk about for years.
Freshen up, then head to Healesville Sanctuary for a Wade with the Platypus experience, or a Magic Moment encounter – hand-feed an echidna or give a wombat a tickle behind the ear.
Lunch at Herd in Healesville, outdoors at Levantine Hills, or overlooking vines at Meletos or Oakridge. Then it’s back to Melbourne, just one hour from the Yarra Valley.
Trade tip: The balloon flight requires an early start but it’s the signature moment of this itinerary. Weather-dependent, so always have a backup plan. The Wade with the Platypus experience at Healesville is unique to this sanctuary and highly sought after – pre-booking essential. This itinerary pairs naturally with a Melbourne city stay either side.

FIVE-DAY ITINERARY
Wildlife & Adventure – Day by Day
Healesville Sanctuary & Yarra Valley
Head straight for Healesville Sanctuary, just 1.5 hours from central Melbourne. Spend the morning interacting with Australia’s iconic animals. Explore the Wurundjeri Walk that takes visitors through emotive soundscapes, sculpture, a Dreaming Place, and an ancient scar tree. It’s cultural immersion woven into a wildlife experience – something international travellers rarely expect from a sanctuary visit.
Lunch at Rochford Winery, then head out on a winery tour with a difference – on a Segway. In the evening, sip a glass of red wine on your deck at Yering Gorge Cottages while watching the resident mob of kangaroos (including a rare white one) graze on the lawns.
Trade tip: The Wurundjeri Walk at Healesville adds cultural depth that differentiates this itinerary from a standard wildlife park visit. Yering Gorge Cottages with its wild kangaroos on the lawn delivers that quintessential Australian moment. The Segway winery tour is unexpected and photographs brilliantly – a strong add for younger demographics and social media-savvy travellers.
Hot Air Balloon & Yarra Valley Exploration
Up early for a dawn hot-air balloon flight over the Yarra Valley, drifting above world-class vineyards and tall forests as the landscape wakes up below. Champagne breakfast on landing. It’s the kind of morning that recalibrates expectations about what regional Victoria can deliver.
Spend the rest of the day exploring the Valley at your own pace. Visit the Dandenong Ranges for walks through towering Mountain Ash forest. Take a ride on Puffing Billy. Feed native birds at Grants Reserve. Or stay in the Valley for more wine tasting and a leisurely lunch overlooking the vines.
Trade tip: The balloon flight is weather-dependent and requires a very early start, but the payoff is extraordinary. Book it for Day 2 rather than Day 1 to avoid jet-lag clashes. Have a backup activity ready (Puffing Billy works well as a fallback). This day is intentionally flexible – let clients choose their own pace after the early start.

Mornington Peninsula & Moonlit Sanctuary
Head south to the Mornington Peninsula. Visit Moonlit Sanctuary for an immersive wildlife experience in enchanting bushland – over 70 Australian species, with hands-on encounters including koala cuddles, kangaroo feeding, and close encounters with dingoes, reptiles, and native birds. The sanctuary also offers evening lantern-lit tours to meet nocturnal wildlife, which is a completely different experience from the daytime visit.
In the afternoon, ride the Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola for panoramic views, then take to the coast. Walk the cliff paths, visit the beach boxes, or head to Peninsula Hot Springs for a soak in the hilltop thermal pools as the sun goes down.
Trade tip: Moonlit Sanctuary’s evening lantern-lit tour is a standout product. If you can build an overnight on the Peninsula into the itinerary, do the daytime sanctuary visit plus the evening tour on the same day for a wildlife double. Peninsula Hot Springs at sunset is the perfect wind-down. Overnight at Carmel at Sorrento or Peppers Moonah Links.

Phillip Island – Seals, Koalas & Penguins
Continue around Western Port Bay to Phillip Island. The wildlife density on this island is remarkable. Start at the Koala Conservation Centre with its treetop boardwalks. Cruise to Seal Rocks to see the 30,000-strong colony of Australian fur seals with Wildlife Coast Cruises or Wild Ocean EcoBoat.
Stop at the pelican feeding at San Remo at noon if your timing works. Explore Churchill Island’s working heritage farm. And as the day fades, the Penguin Parade. Take the Ultimate Tour for a private beach experience with just 10 guests, or the Penguins Plus upgrade for close-up underground viewing.
Trade tip: For wildlife and adventure clients, the EcoBoat trip to Seal Rocks is the highlight of the Phillip Island day – it’s wild, up close, and unpredictable. Pair it with the Ultimate Penguin Tour in the evening for a day that delivers two genuinely world-class wildlife encounters. Overnight at Phillip Island Apartments in Cowes or Glen Isla House for something more boutique.

Warburton & Upper Yarra Valley Adventure
The final day heads to Warburton in the Upper Yarra Valley – approximately two hours from Phillip Island. Warburton Adventure Company specialises in guided soft adventure experiences through spectacular landscapes. River sledging on rapids that range from gentle to exhilarating. Mountain biking through ancient forests. Abseiling from heights with stunning valley views. Guided walks in the serene Redwood forest. Foraging tours exploring the edible offerings of the local ecosystem.
This is genuine outdoor adventure in a region that most international visitors have never heard of. The guides are local, passionate, and focused on sharing their favourite spots.
Alternatively, revisit Healesville Sanctuary for any experiences missed on Day 1, or spend time exploring the Upper Yarra Valley’s quieter cellar doors. Head back to Melbourne in the late afternoon – just over an hour’s drive.
Trade tip: Warburton Adventure Company is an excellent product for active travellers and younger demographics. River sledging is the hero activity. The foraging tours appeal to a foodie crossover market. This final day gives the itinerary a strong, active finish rather than winding down. For clients who’d prefer something gentler, the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk in the Dandenong Ranges is a rewarding alternative.
