Top to Bottom – The Full Outback Crossing
The Ghan is one of those rail journeys that genuinely lives up to the reputation. It crosses the entire Australian continent from top to bottom – Darwin to Adelaide – through some of the most remote, varied, and visually extraordinary landscape on earth. Tropical Top End bushland gives way to the Red Centre’s burnt ochre plains, then to the pale, arid expanse of the South Australian outback. The distances involved are immense. The scenery changes completely.
The Ghan Expedition is a 4-day, 3-night all-inclusive rail journey operating April to October. Guests travel in Platinum or Gold Service by night, and by day they leave the train for curated Off Train Experiences at Katherine, Alice Springs, and Coober Pedy. This isn’t a passive sightseeing trip. There are gorge cruises, desert walks, outback dining under a sky thick with stars, and the option to fly over Uluru. For travel agents building premium Australian itineraries, the journey itself becomes the destination.

COMPLETE ITINERARY
Your Ghan Expedition – Day by Day
Depart Darwin & Explore Katherine
The journey begins with a morning departure from Darwin Railway Terminal. There’s a welcome experience with light refreshments, barista coffee, and sparkling wine before you even board – it sets the tone nicely. Once settled into your cabin, make your way to the restaurant for lunch accompanied by Australian wines as the train heads south through the tropical Top End.
Early afternoon brings an arrival at the township of Katherine. Guests disembark for their choice of Off Train Experience at Nitmiluk Gorge – a place of towering sandstone cliffs and calm waters flowing through an ancient carved waterway. The gorge is culturally significant to the Jawoyn people, and the guided experiences reflect that. Depending on the option chosen, guests may cruise the gorge, walk its rim, or take in the landscape from Indigenous-led perspectives.
Back on board, dinner is served as the train continues its journey south into the night. (Lunch, Dinner)
Trade tip: Many international clients won’t have heard of Nitmiluk Gorge, but it consistently surprises. The scale of the sandstone walls from water level is genuinely impressive. For clients arriving in Darwin a day early, we can arrange Top End touring – Litchfield National Park or a Darwin harbour experience – as a pre-rail addition.

A Full Day in the Red Centre
Guests wake to the spectacular Red Centre landscape through their cabin window. This is the day that sells the trip, honestly. A full day of Off Train Experiences awaits in Alice Springs, with multiple options: a coach tour of “The Alice,” an off-road cycle tour, a walking tour of the Alice Springs Desert Park, or a discovery walk at Simpsons Gap.
For clients who want something truly exceptional, an optional scenic flight over Uluru is available as an upgrade. The aerial perspective of Uluru and Kata Tjuta from a light aircraft is remarkable – and it means clients can experience the Red Centre’s most iconic landmark even on a north-south rail itinerary.
The day culminates with a signature dining experience at the Historic Telegraph Station. Guests are wined, dined, and serenaded under a blanket of outback stars. There’s even the opportunity to ride a camel. It sounds almost too much, but it works beautifully. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Trade tip: The Telegraph Station dinner is the hero moment of the entire Ghan Expedition. It photographs wonderfully and clients talk about it long after they return home. The optional Uluru scenic flight is worth flagging at the booking stage – it’s an additional cost but adds enormous value for clients who may not be visiting Uluru separately.

Manguri & the Underground Town of Coober Pedy
Morning brings a stop at Manguri, a remote siding in the South Australian outback where the sun casts its warmth across vast, empty earth. From here, guests venture into Coober Pedy – one of Australia’s most unusual towns. This is where 70 per cent of the world’s opals originate, and more than half the population lives underground to escape the searing desert heat.
Off Train Experiences in Coober Pedy include the dramatic Breakaways landscape, opal mining demonstrations, and town tours that take in underground homes, churches, and shops carved into the rock. It’s eccentric and fascinating in equal measure. The kind of place that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Dinner is served back on board as the train continues its final leg toward Adelaide. A nightcap in the lounge car, watching the outback fade into the South Australian pastoral country, is a fitting way to wind down. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Trade tip: Coober Pedy is a genuine talking point for international travellers – an underground town in the middle of the desert that mines opals. It’s unlike anything they’ll have encountered. The Breakaways landscape is strikingly photogenic too. This day offers a completely different character from Alice Springs, which keeps the itinerary varied.
Arrive in Adelaide
A leisurely brunch on board as the train makes its way into Adelaide. There’s no rush. The final hours are about savouring the journey and watching the landscape shift one last time – from outback to the gentle hills and vineyards of South Australia’s settled country. The train arrives in Adelaide, and guests disembark. (Breakfast)
Adelaide itself is well worth extending for. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills wine regions are right on the doorstep. For something different, a Murray River cruise or a few nights at a boutique retreat in the Adelaide Hills makes a superb post-rail addition.
Trade tip: We strongly recommend booking at least one or two nights in Adelaide post-train. After three nights on The Ghan, clients are relaxed and in a good frame of mind for wine country touring. Australia and Beyond Holidays can arrange accommodation, Adelaide city touring, wine region day trips, Murray River cruises, and onward flights to Melbourne, Sydney, or beyond. The Ghan pairs naturally with Great Ocean Road touring, Kangaroo Island, or an east coast extension.
