Sydney Reef and Rock

An 11-night independent touring package connecting Sydney, Uluru, and Cairns – three of Australia’s most iconic destinations in a single itinerary. Includes accommodation at Vibe Hotel Sydney, Lost Camel Uluru, and Hilton Cairns (or similar), a full-day Blue Mountains tour, Uluru sunset with BBQ dinner, guided Uluru base walk, a full-day Sunlover outer reef experience at Moore Reef pontoon, and private transfers throughout. Built by Australia and Beyond Holidays (AABH) – ATAS-accredited (No. 13752) and backed by over 30 years of collective inbound tourism experience – for travel agents packaging Fully Independent Traveller (FIT) programmes and classic Australian itineraries.

About This Package

Sydney, Uluru & the Great Barrier Reef

If a client is visiting Australia for the first time – or even the second – these are the three destinations that tend to sit at the top of their list. Sydney for the harbour and the Blue Mountains. Uluru for the spiritual heart of the continent. Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef for one of the natural wonders of the world. It’s a combination that sells itself, frankly.

This 11-night package stitches those three destinations together into a coherent, well-paced independent itinerary. Four nights in Sydney include a full-day Blue Mountains tour with Scenic World and Sydney Zoo, plus two free days to explore at leisure or add optional experiences. Two nights at Uluru take in the famous sunset with an outdoor BBQ dinner and a guided 10.5 km base walk the following morning. Then five nights in Cairns, anchored by a full-day Sunlover outer reef experience at Moore Reef pontoon – snorkelling, semi-submersible tours, underwater observatory, lunch included – with additional leisure days to explore the Daintree, Port Douglas, or simply relax. Private transfers are covered throughout, and accommodation is at Vibe Hotel Sydney, Lost Camel Uluru, and Hilton Cairns (or similar, subject to availability). Domestic flights between the three destinations are not included but can be quoted and added. It’s built for agents packaging classic Australian FIT itineraries or looking for a reliable multi-destination framework they can customise further.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Your Sydney Reef and Rock Experience – Day by Day

Airport Transfer & Settle Into Sydney

Clients arrive at Sydney Airport and are met by a private transfer to Vibe Hotel Sydney (or similar) for four nights. The hotel sits in the heart of the CBD, within walking distance of Hyde Park, Chinatown, and Sydney Tower, with Surry Hills and Darlinghurst just minutes away.

Vibe Hotel Sydney features 198 spacious rooms including 13 suites, plus a rooftop pool, sauna, and gym. It’s a solid mid-range option in a genuinely useful location – close enough to the harbour and main attractions that clients can hit the ground running, but also tucked into a neighbourhood with good restaurants and bars.

The rest of the day is at leisure. Depending on arrival time, we can arrange optional afternoon experiences – a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, a city sights tour, or a harbour cruise. Or clients can simply wander down to Circular Quay, take in the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from the foreshore, and ease into it.

Trade tip: The private airport transfer takes around 25 minutes to the CBD depending on traffic. For clients arriving from international long-haul flights, the rooftop pool at the Vibe is a surprisingly good way to shake off jet lag. If they’re up for something more active, we can add a sunset harbour cruise or an early evening walking tour.

An iconic view of Sydney's most famous landmarks illuminated during golden hour, featuring the distinctive white shell-shaped Sydney Opera House in the foreground, the steel arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline glowing against a vibrant sunset sky reflected in the calm harbor waters.
A stunning panoramic view of Sydney, Australia during the blue hour twilight, featuring the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge illuminated in golden light, the distinctive Sydney Opera House on the left, and the glittering skyline reflected in the calm harbour waters.

Full-Day Blue Mountains & Sydney Zoo Tour

A guided day tour west from Sydney into the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains – over one million acres of rainforest, pristine bushland, and dramatic cliff faces. This is one of those experiences that consistently surprises international visitors. The scale of the Jamison Valley, the haze of eucalyptus oil that gives the mountains their blue tinge – it’s something you have to see in person.

The day covers a lot of ground. Clients view the Three Sisters rock formation from Echo Point, then visit Scenic World where optional rides include the Scenic Railway, Cableway, Skyway, and a 2.4 km Walkway through Jurassic-era rainforest. There’s free time in the village of Leura for lunch and a wander through antique shops and galleries. The route continues along the Cliff Drive through Megalong Valley for sweeping views, and through the heart of Katoomba.

The day finishes at Sydney Zoo, where clients see native Australian animals – kangaroos, wallabies, emus, dingoes, koalas, wombats – in an open-range, cage-free environment. Aboriginal guides lead the Bungarribee Dreaming Experience, sharing knowledge of traditional tools, artefacts, and bush tucker.

Trade tip: This is a full day and covers a significant amount. The Blue Mountains sit roughly 90 minutes west of central Sydney, so early departure is standard. Scenic World’s four rides are an optional add-on to the tour and are not included in the base package. The Aboriginal cultural component at Sydney Zoo is genuine and well-delivered – worth highlighting for clients interested in Indigenous Australian culture. The Blue Mountains are noticeably cooler than Sydney, so advise clients to layer up.

The dramatic sandstone cliffs, lush vegetation, and expansive valley views showcase one of Australia's most recognizable natural landmarks and popular tourist attractions.

Free Day to Explore Sydney

A free day in Sydney. The beauty of two leisure days here is that clients can pace themselves. Today might be the Opera House tour, a ferry to Manly Beach, or the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. For those wanting something more curated, we can arrange a private harbour sailing experience, a food tour through the inner city, or a trip to Taronga Zoo.

Sydney is a city that rewards wandering. The Rocks neighbourhood has colonial history and weekend markets. The Royal Botanic Garden is free and sits right on the harbour. Barangaroo’s waterfront precinct has good dining. And for clients who just want a beach day – Bondi is 20 minutes by bus from the CBD.

Trade tip: We’d suggest having a conversation with clients before departure about what they want from their Sydney free days. Some will want to pack every hour; others want the space to explore on their own terms. We can pre-book optional tours or leave it open. The Harbour Bridge Climb is popular and can sell out, so if clients are interested, it’s best to lock that in early.

A vibrant aerial view of Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, showcasing the iconic golden sand crescent lined with colorful beachfront buildings, turquoise waves with surfers, and sunbathers scattered across the beach. The scenic coastal suburb rises behind the beach with multi-story apartments and homes, while a grassy park area in the foreground hosts picnickers under a brilliant blue sky.
A saxophone player performs on a waterfront promenade at night, with the illuminated Sydney Harbour Bridge visible in the background and a yellow Fishburn ferry visible to the right. Pedestrians stroll past the street musician in this iconic Sydney harbour scene.

Second Free Day in Sydney

Another day at leisure in Sydney. With the Blue Mountains already ticked off, this is a good day for harbour-based experiences, shopping, or museum visits. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is excellent and free. The Museum of Contemporary Art sits right at Circular Quay. For something different, a day trip to the Hunter Valley wine region can be arranged.

Trade tip: Two free days in Sydney gives agents real flexibility when building itineraries. You can leave both open, fill one with a structured experience and leave the other free, or add paid options to both. It depends entirely on the client. We have a full range of Sydney day tours and activities that can be quoted and added at any point before departure.

Participants on the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb experience an elevated perspective overlooking Sydney Harbour, with the iconic Sydney Opera House and city skyline visible below. The image captures the bridge's distinctive steel lattice structure and the vibrant blue waters of the harbour, showcasing one of Australia's most popular tourist activities.

Transfer to Airport, Fly to Uluru & Sunset BBQ Dinner

A private transfer collects clients from the hotel and takes them to Sydney Airport for the direct flight to Uluru (Ayers Rock Airport). On arrival, they’re met and transferred to the Lost Camel Hotel (or similar) at Ayers Rock Resort for two nights.

The transition from Sydney to the Red Centre is dramatic. Within hours, clients go from a global harbour city to the vast silence of the outback. That contrast is part of what makes this itinerary work.

This evening, clients are collected from the hotel for the Uluru Sunset and BBQ Dinner experience. The drive into Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park comes with expert commentary from the Driver Guide. Uluru stands 348 metres above ground level, though most of its mass sits below the surface. As the sun drops toward the western horizon, clients enjoy nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine while watching the rock cycle through its famous colour changes – reds, oranges, purples. After sunset, the evening continues at an exclusive outdoor venue for an Aussie BBQ dinner with a variety of Australian meats and salads, accompanied by wine, beer, or juice. There’s time for stargazing afterwards, weather permitting.

Trade tip: Advise clients to photograph Uluru every five minutes or so during sunset – the gradual colour shift is remarkable and easy to miss if you’re just watching. The BBQ dinner is relaxed and social. The Lost Camel is a comfortable contemporary-style hotel within the resort precinct. Flights from Sydney to Uluru are around 3.5 hours direct.

Guided Morning Base Walk of Uluru

Early rise for the morning base walk. In the intimacy of a small group, clients join a Driver Guide for a 10.5 km walk around the entire base of Uluru. Before setting off, there’s a light breakfast as the morning light begins to reveal the detail and scale of the rock.

The walk visits sacred sites, views Aboriginal rock art, and passes waterfalls and the striking Kantju Gorge – especially impressive after rain, when water flows from the side of Uluru and plunges into the gorge below. Even in dry conditions, the base walk reveals features and textures that are invisible from a distance. It takes roughly four hours at a comfortable pace.

The afternoon is free. Clients can relax at the resort, visit the Field of Light art installation (if operating), or explore the resort’s cultural centre.

Trade tip: The base walk is 10.5 km, so it’s not trivial – but it’s flat and the pace is gentle. Clients should bring good walking shoes, water, sun protection, and a hat. The early start means cooler temperatures, which makes a big difference in the Red Centre. This walk is the best way to really understand Uluru beyond the postcard image. It’s worth encouraging clients to do it even if they’re not regular walkers.

Two cyclists ride bikes on red desert terrain with the distinctive massive sandstone monolith of Uluru rising dramatically in the background under clear blue skies. This iconic Australian landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site is set in the arid Red Centre landscape.
A scenic hiking trail winds through the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia, featuring distinctive red sandstone cliffs with natural cave formations, sparse desert vegetation, and a clear blue sky. The trail showcases the dramatic geological landscape and arid environment characteristic of Australia's iconic outback destination.

Transfer to Uluru Airport, Fly to Cairns

Clients are transferred to Uluru Airport for their flight to Cairns. On arrival, a private transfer takes them to the Hilton Cairns (or similar) for five nights.

The Hilton sits on Cairns’ waterfront amid tropical greenery, just 400 metres from the Reef Terminal where the majority of Great Barrier Reef day trips depart. There’s a lagoon-style outdoor pool and an on-site spa. Crystal Cascades and Cairns Botanic Gardens are within 22 km.

After the desert intensity of Uluru, the switch to tropical Far North Queensland is another sensory reset. Warm, humid air. Palm trees. The Esplanade lagoon. It’s a different Australia altogether.

Trade tip: The proximity of the Hilton to the Reef Terminal is a genuine practical advantage – on reef day, clients can walk to the departure point. Cairns itself is compact and walkable, with good restaurants along the Esplanade and in the city centre. The five-night stay gives clients plenty of breathing room for reef, rainforest, and relaxation.

Free Day to Explore Cairns

A leisure day in Cairns. Clients can explore at their own pace or choose from a range of optional experiences. The Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway combination is a standout – clients ride the historic railway up through the ranges and glide back down by cableway over the rainforest canopy. For something closer to town, the Cairns Aquarium or Botanic Gardens are easy half-day options. The Daintree Rainforest is also accessible as a day trip from Cairns for clients wanting to venture further afield.

Trade tip: We have a full selection of Cairns and Port Douglas day tours and activities available for this day. The Kuranda Railway and Skyrail combo is one of the most popular options and works well as a full-day experience. For clients who prefer a half-day, the Cairns Aquarium followed by a relaxed afternoon at the Esplanade Lagoon is a good fit. Worth discussing preferences with clients before departure so the right option can be locked in.

Full-Day Outer Reef Experience at Moore Reef

The centrepiece of the Cairns leg. Clients make their way to the Reef Fleet Terminal by 08:30 – a short walk from the Hilton – and board the Sunlover vessel for a full-day outer reef experience at Moore Reef.

Moore Reef is the real thing. Clear water, colourful coral, abundant fish life, and friendly resident turtles and Maori wrasse. Sunlover operates a custom-designed floating pontoon with exclusive use, making it accessible for all ages and abilities. The range of included activities is impressive: snorkelling with full equipment, semi-submersible and glass-bottom boat tours, an underwater observatory, touch tank and fish feeding presentations, a 30-metre spiralling waterslide into the tropical ocean, and an enclosed ocean pool for younger children or less confident swimmers. A trained lifeguard watches from an elevated station, and two snorkel platforms provide easy water access via stairs.

Lunch is included on the pontoon.

Trade tip: This is genuinely suitable for the full spectrum of clients – from experienced divers (introductory and certified dives available at additional cost) to non-swimmers who can stay dry and still experience the reef through the glass-bottom boat and observatory. The waterslide is a hit with families. Moore Reef’s outer location means better visibility and coral quality than many inner reef options. It’s one of the most consistently well-reviewed reef experiences out of Cairns.

The image captures the stunning contrast between the deep blue deeper waters and the lighter turquoise shallows, with the coral reef's intricate patterns clearly visible from above.

Multiple passengers are swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear water around the vessel, with visible underwater viewing platforms.

Second Free Day in Cairns

Another leisure day in Cairns. With the reef experience ticked off, this is a great day for a Daintree Rainforest excursion, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail combination, or a trip up to Port Douglas. For clients who prefer a quieter day, the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, Botanic Gardens, and local galleries are all within easy reach of the hotel.

Trade tip: A Daintree day tour on this day gives clients two UNESCO World Heritage experiences on consecutive days – reef then rainforest. It’s a compelling combination worth highlighting in your proposals. Alternatively, a Port Douglas day trip offers a scenic coastal drive, Four Mile Beach, and boutique shopping in a relaxed tropical village. This day can also be left open for clients who want the flexibility to set their own pace. We have a full range of Cairns and Tropical North Queensland day tours available to quote and add.

A green cable car cabin suspended high above a lush rainforest canopy descends toward the Kuranda Valley, offering panoramic views of agricultural fields, mountains, and coastal blue water in the distance. Passengers inside the gondola experience a scenic aerial journey through the tropical landscape of Far North Queensland.
A colorful diesel locomotive and vintage passenger train cars traverse a curved metal trestle bridge spanning above lush rainforest canopy. The train features vibrant red and cream passenger carriages with a multi-colored diesel engine leading the consist across the dramatic iron lattice bridge structure.

Final Leisure Day in Cairns

A final free day in Cairns before departure. Clients can revisit a favourite spot, pick up last-minute shopping along the Esplanade, or simply enjoy the hotel pool and tropical surroundings. For those wanting one more experience, the Atherton Tablelands offer waterfalls, crater lakes, and wildlife encounters within a scenic day trip from Cairns. A hot air balloon flight over the Tablelands at dawn is another memorable option.

Trade tip: This third leisure day in Cairns gives the itinerary breathing room and avoids the rushed feel that back-to-back touring can create. It’s also a useful buffer day – if weather affects the reef trip on Day 9, there’s flexibility to reschedule. For agents building longer programmes, this day can easily be swapped for a structured tour or activity.

Private Transfer to Cairns Airport

A private transfer collects clients from the Hilton and takes them to Cairns Airport for their onward flight.

Trade tip: Cairns Airport is small and manageable – no need for the kind of buffer clients might allow at Sydney. For agents building extended itineraries, Cairns connects to all major Australian cities with direct flights. This package can be extended with additional nights in Cairns to take in the Daintree, Port Douglas, or the Atherton Tablelands. It also works as the final leg of a longer east coast itinerary, or as a springboard to onward travel. The full itinerary – and variations on it – can be quoted and booked via our trade-only FIT/HELiO booking platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

No – this is a land-only package. Domestic flights between Sydney, Uluru, and Cairns are not included but can be quoted and added to the itinerary. We work with all major domestic carriers and can package flights at competitive trade rates. The routing is straightforward: Sydney to Uluru (approximately 3.5 hours direct), Uluru to Cairns (connecting service, typically via Sydney or another capital city – we’ll advise on the best routing and timing for your clients’ dates). We recommend discussing flight options early so we can lock in the best availability.
Each destination has its own rhythm. Sydney is pleasant year-round, though spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer the most comfortable temperatures. Uluru is best visited between April and October when daytime temperatures are more manageable – the Red Centre gets extremely hot in summer. Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef are best from June to October when the weather is dry, visibility is excellent, and stinger season hasn’t started. For agents wanting the widest window where all three destinations align well, April to September is the sweet spot. That said, we operate this itinerary year-round and can advise on seasonal considerations for specific travel dates.
The base walk is 10.5 km on flat ground and takes roughly four hours at a comfortable pace. It’s not strenuous, but it’s not trivial either – especially in warmer weather. Clients should be able to walk comfortably for several hours. Good walking shoes, sun protection, a hat, and plenty of water are essential. The early morning start helps – temperatures are significantly cooler before mid-morning. For clients who aren’t confident about the full circuit, shorter partial walks along the base are possible. We can discuss alternatives when building the itinerary.
Yes. The Sydney Reef and Rock itinerary works well as a framework for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) programmes or tailor-made group travel. We can add private dining experiences in Sydney, exclusive Uluru experiences under the stars, team-building activities, private reef charters out of Cairns, and more. For larger groups, we source appropriate accommodation across all three destinations and coordinate logistics end to end – transfers, flights, touring, the lot. Contact us at enquiries@aabh.com.au with your group size and requirements and we’ll put together a detailed proposal.
Absolutely. This is a starting framework that we customise to suit your clients. Common modifications include adding extra nights in any destination, swapping accommodation tiers, adding a Port Douglas extension from Cairns, including a Daintree Rainforest day, or extending the Uluru leg to include Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). Some agents drop one destination and deepen the stay at the others. We also regularly connect this itinerary with our Tasmanian, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and New Zealand products to build longer programmes. The full itinerary and variations can be quoted and booked via our trade-only FIT/HELiO booking platform, available 24/7 at wholesale rates.
A stunning twilight view of Brisbane's modern city skyline reflecting in the Brisbane River, featuring the iconic Story Bridge, contemporary high-rise buildings illuminated against a vibrant purple and blue sky, with historic riverside landmarks in the foreground including a lighthouse and heritage structures.
