Cairns Day Tour for the Travel Trade

Fitzroy Island Day Trip from Cairns

A full-day island escape to one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most accessible tropical islands – just 45 minutes by fast catamaran from Cairns. Coral beaches shaped over thousands of years, fringing reef you can snorkel straight from shore, and dense rainforest walking trails. An ideal inclusion for Fully Independent Traveller (FIT) itineraries, group series, and incentive programmes.

About This Destination

Fitzroy Island, Tropical North Queensland

Fitzroy Island is part of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, sitting a 45-minute catamaran ride off the coast of Cairns. Almost the entire island is protected national park – dense tropical rainforest, granite boulders, and fringing coral reefs accessible straight from the beach. It is one of the few reef destinations where travellers can snorkel directly from shore without needing a boat transfer to an outer reef.

What makes Fitzroy unusual is its beaches. Unlike typical continental islands, many of the shorelines here are formed from crushed coral, built up over thousands of years and reshaped by hundreds of tropical storms. The result is a textured, distinctive landscape that speaks to the island’s deep connection with the reef itself.

Fitzroy Island is known by the Traditional Owners, the Gunggandji people, as a place of deep cultural significance. The surrounding reefs and rainforest hold stories passed down through generations, connecting people to the sea and land. Visitors are encouraged to explore respectfully, appreciating both the natural beauty and the cultural heritage of this place.

For travel agents building Cairns and Tropical North Queensland programmes, Fitzroy Island is a straightforward day trip that gives clients genuine reef and rainforest in a single outing. The 45-minute catamaran crossing keeps logistics tight, and the island offers enough variety to fill a full day – snorkelling, a lighthouse summit hike, kayaking, or just sitting on a coral beach with a cold drink.

  • Full-day island experience with return fast catamaran from Cairns
  • Snorkelling, glass-bottom boat tours, rainforest walks, and optional guided activities
  • Suitable for FIT, series groups, incentive add-ons, and families
  • Multiple package tiers available – from ferry-only transfers to all-inclusive options
  • Fully customisable with upgrade options and private group arrangements

COMPLETE ITINERARY

Your Fitzroy Island Day – Hour by Hour

Check-In at Cairns Marina

Check-in opens at 8:45am at Cairns Marina. Travellers have a full hour – until 9:45am – to check in, collect boarding passes, and get oriented. The terminal area is well-equipped and centrally located, so coordinating with hotel transfers from Cairns CBD or Northern Beaches accommodation is straightforward.

Trade tip: For groups staying in Palm Cove or Port Douglas, we can arrange dedicated coach transfers timed to arrive comfortably within the check-in window. Private charter options are also available for incentive groups wanting an exclusive start to the day.

A scenic waterfront promenade in Cairns, Australia, featuring a calm lagoon, palm-lined esplanade with public pool facilities, and modern high-rise residential and commercial buildings reflected in the still water under a clear blue sky.

Boarding Commences

Boarding begins at 9:30am. Clients should make their way to the boarding gate promptly – it closes at 10:00am sharp, and there is no flexibility on this. Staff will direct travellers to their seats on the air-conditioned catamaran. The vessel is comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating options.

Trade tip: We can arrange priority boarding and reserved seating for group bookings. Worth flagging to your clients that 10:00am is a hard cut-off. If they miss the gate, they miss the boat – there is no second departure.

The densely vegetated island slopes dramatically toward the shore, with a wooden jetty and beach facilities visible along the waterfront.

Depart Cairns Marina

The catamaran departs Cairns Marina at 10:15am for the 45-minute crossing to Fitzroy Island. It is a sheltered, generally calm ride through the waters between the mainland and the island. Staff on board run through the island layout, activity options, and safety information during the crossing – so clients can plan their day before they step ashore.

Trade tip: The crossing itself is sheltered and generally calm, which matters if you have clients who are anxious about boat travel. Most passengers barely notice the swell.

Crystal-clear blue water and dramatic light rays streaming from above create a serene and immersive reef diving scene.

Arrive Fitzroy Island

The catamaran docks at Fitzroy Island at around 11:00am. A short jetty leads onto the island where the main hub sits – Foxy’s Cafe, the dive shop, equipment hire, and the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre are all within a few minutes’ walk. Travellers collect snorkelling gear and stinger suits here before heading out.

The Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is right by the arrival area. It is a quick but worthwhile stop, especially for families and eco-conscious travellers. Entry is free, and guided Turtle Talk presentations can be added to the itinerary.

Lunch boxes are available for collection from Foxy’s between 11:00am and 2:00pm, giving clients the flexibility to eat whenever it suits them. The picnic lunch is prepared by the Fitzroy Island Resort chefs – a fresh baguette, seasonal salads, a sweet treat, fruit, and a light snack.

Trade tip: For groups, we can pre-arrange lunch collection times to keep things running smoothly. Dietary variations are available including gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, nut-free, egg-free, and halal options with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice.

Nudey Beach at Fitzroy Island

Snorkelling, Walks & Island Activities

From here, the day is open. Fitzroy Island’s fringing reef is the main drawcard – travellers can wade in from the beach and be swimming over coral gardens within minutes. No boat transfer to an outer reef needed. The reef supports hard and soft corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and giant clams. Visibility is generally excellent, and the sheltered waters mean conditions are calm for most of the year.

Snorkelling equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, buoyancy vest, and protective lycra suit) is included in most package tiers. The crew will advise on conditions and best snorkelling times before clients disembark.

For clients who prefer not to swim, the glass-bottom boat tour offers a way to experience the reef without getting wet. The island also has four walking trails ranging from a gentle 700m Secret Garden loop to the 4.2km Summit Circuit with views across the Coral Sea. Nudey Beach – regularly voted one of Australia’s best – is a short walk from the main hub.

Stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking are available for hire. Some clients will want to do everything. Others will just want to sit somewhere quiet with a cold drink.

Trade tip: Guided snorkel tours, guided kayak tours, and guided rainforest walks with a local naturalist can all be arranged as optional extras. Sea kayak and paddleboard hire can be pre-booked at wholesale rates for groups. For incentive programmes, we can set up beach games and team-building activities on the sand.

The image captures the dramatic contrast between the deep blue ocean, shallow turquoise shallows, rocky granite outcrops, and dense green jungle coastline.

Commence Boarding for Return

Boarding for the return ferry commences at 3:15pm. Clients should start making their way back to the jetty from wherever they are on the island – whether that is Nudey Beach, the lighthouse trail, or a final drink at Foxy’s. Equipment needs to be returned before boarding.

Trade tip: It is worth reminding clients that the walk back from Nudey Beach takes about 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. Groups doing the lighthouse or summit trail should plan to be back at the hub well before 3:00pm.

Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef at Fitzroy Island

Depart Fitzroy Island

The catamaran departs Fitzroy Island at 3:30pm for the return crossing to Cairns. Another 45 minutes of sheltered water. Most travellers are pleasantly exhausted by this point – it has been a full day of reef, rainforest, and sun.

Kayaking at Fitzroy Island

Arrive Cairns Marina

The catamaran arrives back at Cairns Marina by approximately 4:30pm. Transfers back to CBD hotels or Northern Beaches accommodation can be arranged for a seamless return. Most travellers are back at their hotel by late afternoon, with the evening free for the Cairns Esplanade or night markets.

Trade tip: This day trip pairs well with our Daintree Rainforest, Kuranda, and outer Great Barrier Reef multi-day itineraries. For clients who want to see both the island reef and the outer reef, a two-day combination package is available that pairs Fitzroy Island with a Moore Reef pontoon trip – two distinctly different reef experiences that can be booked within seven days. Contact our team to build a complete Tropical North Queensland package. For clients who want to stay overnight, accommodation at Fitzroy Island Resort can be arranged.

We suggest a waterproof bag for electronics and some cash for the island bar and general store, though card payment is accepted at most outlets. Buoyancy vests are available for anyone who wants the extra confidence in the water.
Ferry crossings may occasionally be affected by severe weather. In the event of a cancellation, travellers receive a full refund or can reschedule to an alternative date. We monitor conditions closely and communicate changes to bookings as early as possible. It is worth noting that the island has high and low tides which affect snorkelling conditions – the crew will advise on the best times before clients disembark. Stingers can be present in the water year-round, so stinger suits are available for hire on board for all water activities.
