Tropical North Queensland
Tropical North Queensland is where two UNESCO World Heritage-listed ecosystems sit almost on top of each other. The Daintree Rainforest – the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on the planet, over 180 million years old – runs right down to the Coral Sea, where the Great Barrier Reef stretches more than 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast. There’s nowhere else on earth where you can walk through ancient jungle in the morning and be diving a pristine outer reef by the afternoon.
This 5-night itinerary combines a Daintree and Cape Tribulation experience with a two-day, one-night live-aboard dive trip on the outer Great Barrier Reef, all based from Cairns. The live-aboard component takes clients well beyond the day-trip reefs, sleeping on the water and diving at sites that most visitors never reach. It suits certified divers and snorkellers alike. For travel agents building premium Australian itineraries where the Great Barrier Reef needs to be more than a tick-box day trip, this is the product.

COMPLETE ITINERARY
Your Reef & Rainforest Adventure – Day by Day
Arrive in Cairns & Settle In
Guests fly into Cairns, the gateway to Tropical North Queensland. Transfer to their hotel and take the rest of the day at their own pace. Cairns is a relaxed, walkable city – the Esplanade lagoon, the boardwalk, and the restaurant strip along the marina are all within easy reach on foot. It’s a good evening to shake off the travel and get acclimatised to the tropical pace.
For clients arriving on early flights, we can arrange an optional afternoon activity – a scenic helicopter flight over the reef, a visit to the Cairns Aquarium, or a Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park experience. None of these are essential. Sometimes the best first day is a quiet one.
Trade tip: Cairns receives direct flights from most Australian capital cities, plus international services from key Asian hubs. For clients arriving from long-haul origins, a rest day on arrival makes a real difference to their enjoyment of the Daintree the following day. We can arrange airport transfers and hotel bookings through our FIT platform.

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation
An early start for the drive north. The itinerary crosses the Daintree River by cable ferry and enters the rainforest proper – a landscape that has existed in some form for over 180 million years. Guided walking trails take guests through dense canopy where ancient fan palms, strangler figs, and epiphytes crowd every surface. The guide provides context on the ecosystem’s significance and the extraordinary biodiversity here, including cassowaries, Boyd’s forest dragons, and the musky rat-kangaroo.
The afternoon continues to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef. It’s visually striking – dense green jungle running directly onto a white sand beach with the Coral Sea beyond. There’s time for a boardwalk through the mangroves, a swim at the beach (seasonal, croc-safe areas), and an interpretive walk before heading to the eco-lodge for the night.
Trade tip: The Daintree day works for all fitness levels. Walks are relatively flat and well maintained. The overnight stay at a Daintree eco-lodge rather than returning to Cairns same-day is what elevates this from a standard day tour – clients get the evening sounds of the rainforest, night spotlighting for wildlife, and a far more immersive experience. We have agreements with several lodge options from boutique to luxury.

Morning in the Daintree & Return to Cairns
The morning is deliberately unhurried. A guided dawn walk or a self-guided boardwalk through the lodge grounds – the forest at first light is an entirely different experience, alive with birdsong and the movement of creatures you won’t spot later in the day. Breakfast at the lodge before departing.
On the return to Cairns, the itinerary includes a stop at Mossman Gorge, a stunning freshwater swimming spot in the traditional country of the Kuku Yalanji people. An optional Indigenous-guided Dreamtime Walk provides cultural context and a Welcome to Country ceremony. Guests arrive back in Cairns by mid-afternoon with time to prepare for the live-aboard departure the following morning.
Trade tip: The Mossman Gorge stop breaks up the drive nicely and adds a meaningful cultural dimension. The Dreamtime Walk should be pre-booked. For clients wanting to compress this, we can run the Daintree as a full day tour returning to Cairns the same night – but the overnight version is significantly better and what we recommend for premium FIT itineraries.

Board the Live-Aboard & First Reef Dives
The live-aboard departs Cairns marina in the morning, heading for the outer Great Barrier Reef. The voyage out takes a couple of hours, and the crew uses transit time for dive briefings, equipment setup, and introductions. By late morning, guests are in the water at the first dive site.
The outer reef is a different world from the inner reefs visited on day trips. Visibility is better. Coral coverage is denser. The marine life is more abundant and varied – reef sharks, giant trevally, Napoleon wrasse, sea turtles, and vast schools of tropical fish are common. Certified divers typically complete two to three dives on the first afternoon, while snorkellers have unlimited access to the reef from the vessel’s swim platform.
Dinner is served on board and a night dive is available for certified divers. Night diving on the reef is a memorable experience – the coral comes alive with nocturnal feeders, sleeping parrotfish, and bioluminescent creatures. Guests sleep on the vessel, anchored at the reef.
Trade tip: The live-aboard component is the real differentiator of this itinerary. Sleeping on the reef, doing a night dive, and having first-light access to the water before day-trip boats arrive gives clients an experience that 95% of Great Barrier Reef visitors never get. Equipment is provided. Both certified and introductory dives are catered for, so it works for mixed groups where not everyone holds a dive card.

Full Day on the Outer Reef & Return to Cairns
Guests wake up anchored at the reef. Early risers can be in the water before breakfast – there’s something genuinely special about a dawn dive with nobody else around. The morning includes two to three more dive sites, typically moving between different reef systems to vary the experience. Bommies, swim-throughs, coral gardens, and wall dives all feature depending on conditions.
Snorkellers continue to have free access throughout, with guided snorkel tours offered by the crew. A light lunch is served before the vessel begins the return voyage to Cairns in the early afternoon. Guests are back at the marina by late afternoon, transferred to their hotel, and the evening is free.
Trade tip: Clients typically complete up to 11 dives across the two days, though six to eight is more common for those who also want to snorkel and relax. The variety of reef sites visited is far greater than any single-day trip can offer. For agents selling to dive enthusiasts, this is the product that makes the itinerary. For non-divers, the snorkelling access and the experience of sleeping on the reef is still a genuine highlight.

Depart Cairns
Transfer to Cairns Airport for onward travel. For clients with late flights, we can arrange a half-day activity – the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway combination is a popular option, as is a morning at the Cairns Botanic Gardens or a last swim at the Esplanade lagoon.
Trade tip: We recommend building in at least a half day in Cairns before departure rather than a dawn flight. After two days on the water, clients appreciate a gentle final morning. This itinerary pairs well with onward travel to the Whitsundays, Uluru, Sydney, or the Gold Coast. For clients wanting a longer reef experience, we can extend the live-aboard to three days/two nights or add a day trip to a different reef section. We build the full Australian itinerary – flights, accommodation, touring, and transfers – through our FIT booking platform.
