Longreach & Winton, Outback Queensland
Longreach and Winton sit at the centre of something distinctly Australian. This is the country where Qantas was born. Where the stories of stockmen, drovers, and distance education shaped a national identity. Where dinosaur fossils lie embedded in ancient mesa formations overlooking plains that stretch to the horizon. It’s not glamorous in the way coastal Australia is. It’s something else entirely – quieter, stranger, and deeply compelling.
The Legendary Longreach & Winton tour is a 6-day guided package departing Longreach, with the option of a first-class sleeper rail journey from Brisbane aboard the Spirit of the Outback. It covers the major highlights of Outback Queensland at an easy pace, with Savannah Guides Operator driver-guides, all meals, en suite accommodation, and every entry and activity included. For travel agents building Australian itineraries that go beyond Sydney and the reef, this is an outback experience that genuinely delivers – and it’s accessible enough for a wide range of travellers.

COMPLETE ITINERARY
Your Outback Journey – Day by Day
Arrive in Longreach & Settle In
Guests arrive at Longreach by QantasLink flight or aboard the Spirit of the Outback train from Brisbane. The Savannah Guides Operator driver-guide meets travellers on arrival and transfers them to their accommodation at the Longreach Motor Inn.
For clients taking the rail option, the Spirit of the Outback is an experience in its own right – a first-class sleeper journey through the Queensland interior that takes roughly 24 hours from Brisbane. The landscape shifts dramatically as the train moves west, from green coastal ranges into open pastoral country and eventually the red-earth plains around Longreach. It is a genuinely memorable way to arrive.
Trade tip: The rail component adds real appeal for international visitors who want an authentic Australian train journey without committing to a multi-day Indian Pacific or Ghan itinerary. It works particularly well for clients from the UK, Japan, and Europe who appreciate rail travel. We can arrange pre-tour accommodation in Brisbane if needed.

Distance Education, Stockman’s Hall of Fame & Camden Park Station
The day opens with a visit to the Longreach School of Distance Education – a genuinely eye-opening experience for international travellers. This is how children in remote Australia are schooled, and it tells you more about outback life than almost any museum could. Guides explain the system and visitors can observe a lesson in progress.
Next, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The themed galleries cover the full sweep of Australia’s pastoral history, from Indigenous land management through to the drovers, shearers, and stockmen who built the inland economy. The Stockman’s Life Live Show brings it all into the present – live horsemanship, muster demonstrations, and the kind of skills that still underpin working stations across the outback.
Late afternoon, the group heads to Camden Park Station for a sunset tour with local graziers. Dinner is served in the property’s 100-year-old woolshed. It’s warm, candlelit, and about as far from a hotel restaurant as you can get.
Trade tip: Camden Park Station is often the surprise highlight for travellers. The personal connection with the grazier family and the woolshed dinner setting create something you simply cannot replicate elsewhere. International clients consistently rate it among their top experiences. Worth emphasising when selling the itinerary.

Rosebank Station, Qantas Founders Museum & Drover’s Sunset Cruise
Morning starts at historic Rosebank Station, originally settled as a sheep and cattle station some 100 years ago. The owners of Outback Aussie Tours host morning tea and share stories of outback life. It is informal and genuine – the kind of interaction that gives travellers a real sense of the community.
The Qantas Founders Museum follows. This is where Qantas began, and the museum tells that story with world-class exhibits and interactive displays. The guided Airpark Tour takes visitors out onto the tarmac to explore retired aircraft up close, including a Boeing 747 and a Boeing 707. For aviation enthusiasts, this alone justifies the trip to Longreach.
Late afternoon brings the Drover’s Sunset Cruise – a gentle paddle steamer journey along the Thomson River with onboard nibbles and the outback turning gold around you. Dinner is served under the stars at Smithy’s Outback Dinner & Show, a two-course table service meal with live entertainment.
Trade tip: The Qantas Founders Museum is a strong drawcard for a wide audience, not only aviation buffs. The Airpark Tour particularly impresses – walking through a retired jumbo jet in the middle of the outback is surreal and memorable. The sunset cruise and dinner under the stars round out a full and satisfying day.

Great Darr River Rail Run, Australian Age of Dinosaurs & Gondwana Observatory
This is a big day. Guests board a heritage Rail Motor for the one-way Great Darr River Rail Run from Longreach – a scenic rail experience through changing outback landscapes. After the rail run, the group transfers by coach to Winton.
On arrival in Winton, there’s a town tour taking in Arno’s Wall (an eccentric local landmark built from machinery parts and curiosities) and what’s believed to be the world’s only musical fence. Then it gets serious. The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum sits perched on a spectacular mesa outside town, and the views alone would be worth the drive. A guided tour through the laboratory and collection room reveals actual dinosaur fossils being prepared and preserved – this is a working palaeontological facility, not just a display.
Sunset brings a deluxe barbecue overlooking the plains where dinosaurs once roamed. After dark, guests are immersed in the Gondwana Observatory night experience – outback skies with zero light pollution, properly interpreted.
Trade tip: The Australian Age of Dinosaurs is genuinely world-class and most international agents won’t know about it. The combination of real fossil preparation, mesa-top location, sunset barbecue, and stargazing creates one of the most distinctive days in any Australian itinerary. Clients who have “seen everything” in Australia will not have seen this.

Winton Town Tour, Waltzing Matilda Centre & Open-Air Cinema
A more leisurely day in Winton. The morning includes a ride around town on a local 100-year-old carriage drawn by horses, followed by the Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum, which tells the story of how Australian transport pioneers carved out the inland road and rail networks.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the centrepiece – a museum dedicated to Australia’s unofficial national anthem and the broader story of Winton and the outback. It’s unexpectedly moving and well presented, connecting a famous song to the landscape and people that inspired it.
Dinner at the iconic North Gregory Hotel, then guests wander next door to the Royal Open-Air Theatre. Built in 1937, it’s one of Australia’s few remaining open-air cinemas, and on Sunday evenings they screen a classic film under the stars. Cold beer, warm night, old movie. It’s a perfect end to the day.
Trade tip: Day 5 is about character. The pace slows down and Winton’s personality comes through. The Royal Open-Air Theatre in particular is one of those experiences that travellers remember fondly – it feels genuinely Australian in a way that’s hard to manufacture. Great for social media too.

Transfer to Longreach & Departure
Following breakfast, guests transfer by coach back to Longreach for their onward departure – either by QantasLink flight or other arranged transport. The tour wraps up with a return to Longreach, and travellers depart with a strong sense of what outback Australia actually feels like.
Trade tip: We recommend packaging this with onward travel to other Queensland or Australian destinations. Longreach connects well to Brisbane, Cairns, and the Whitsundays by air. For clients doing a broader Australian itinerary, this outback section provides a powerful contrast to the coastal and city experiences. It pairs naturally with Great Barrier Reef touring, a Sydney stay, or even a Red Centre extension through Uluru. AABH can build the complete itinerary including domestic flights, accommodation, and transfers across the full journey.
