Three Icons of Tropical North Queensland
This isn’t a resort-hop. It’s three completely distinct Queensland ecosystems – reef, rainforest, and outback – stitched together through properties that each accommodate fewer than 30 guests. The kind of places where the chef knows your name by the second meal and a morning activity might involve snorkelling a pristine fringing reef or riding an ATV through a ghost town.
The Reef Rainforest Outback itinerary spans 8 nights across Orpheus Island Lodge (3 nights on the Great Barrier Reef), Daintree Ecolodge (2 nights in the world’s oldest tropical rainforest), and Mount Mulligan Lodge (3 nights on a 28,000-hectare private outback cattle station). All three are part of the Northern Escape Collection and each operates at a level of intimacy and quality that makes this a standout for agents building premium Australian itineraries, luxury FIT programmes, or incentive rewards that genuinely impress.

COMPLETE ITINERARY
Your Reef Rainforest Outback Journey – Day by Day
Helicopter Transfer & Orpheus Island Lodge
Guests arrive in Townsville and transfer by helicopter to Orpheus Island – a 30-minute scenic flight over the Coral Sea that sets the tone immediately. The island itself stretches across 11 kilometres of immaculate turquoise coastline, comprising more than 1,000 hectares of national park. Orpheus accommodates just 28 guests in 14 rooms, suites and villas. That’s it.
On arrival, there’s time to settle in and explore the lodge – the main pavilion bar, the alfresco dining area, the 25-metre infinity pool that mirrors the Coral Sea, and the Gwandalan Day Spa. Pristine fringing reef is accessible simply by stepping out from the accommodation. The welcome dinner introduces the all-inclusive approach: gourmet meals by chef Paul Wilson and his team, premium Australian wines, beers, and soft beverages throughout.
Trade tip: Helicopter transfers to Orpheus Island are operated by Nautilus Aviation and are not included in the package. Accurate guest weights must be provided at time of booking for all helicopter transfers. We strongly recommend that domestic or international flights are booked AFTER accommodation and helicopter transfers are confirmed.

Snorkelling, Fishing & Island Exploration
A full day on Orpheus Island. Each day includes a curated reef-based experience – guided snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, fishing in the surrounding waters, an island cruise, or a motorised dinghy adventure with a gourmet picnic hamper to a secluded cove. The Giant Clam Garden, a protected snorkelling spot just in the bay, is a highlight most guests don’t expect.
Between scheduled activities, guests have unlimited use of paddle boards, kayaks, catamarans, yoga mats, fishing gear, and snorkelling equipment. The surrounding waters are a fisherman’s playground – light tackle gear is available at leisure, or more serious anglers can head to the outer reef. Take a kayak into the mangroves. Try the catamaran in the sheltered bay. Or just float.
Trade tip: Orpheus is one of those rare Great Barrier Reef properties where the reef quality is exceptional and the guest numbers are tiny. That combination is hard to find. For clients who’ve already done the Whitsundays or Port Douglas, this is the next level up – genuinely exclusive without being pretentious.

Last Day on the Reef
A third day on the island allows guests to revisit favourite spots or try something new. The dinghy adventure with a chef-prepared picnic is worth saving for this day – guests take a motorised dinghy to a secluded beach, snorkel off the shore, and enjoy an intimate private lunch in a sheltered bay. It’s the kind of experience that feels unreasonably indulgent.
The afternoon is free to enjoy the spa, the pool, or simply the quiet of a private island on the Great Barrier Reef. Dinner that evening is the last on Orpheus before the journey shifts to the rainforest.
Trade tip: Three nights on Orpheus is the right amount. Two feels rushed, four can lose momentum for clients who want variety. The transition from reef to rainforest the following day keeps the itinerary moving without feeling hurried.

Transfer to the Daintree Rainforest
Guests helicopter back to the mainland and transfer north to the Daintree Ecolodge, nestled in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest. Believed to be over 180 million years old, the Daintree is the oldest tropical lowland rainforest on earth. The contrast from the open turquoise waters of Orpheus to the dense, ancient canopy of the Daintree is striking.
The Ecolodge offers 15 eco-friendly bayans – treehouses immersed in the canopy among majestic Bull Kauri trees. There’s a private waterfall and swimming hole on the property, the Daintree Wellness Spa, a rainforest restaurant overlooking the lagoon, and dedicated walks through the surrounding forest. The stay includes daily a la carte breakfast, an indulgence picnic hamper, and a three-course dinner at the Julaymba Restaurant.
Trade tip: Ground transfers from Cairns Airport to the Daintree Ecolodge can be arranged. The drive north is scenic and gives clients a chance to see the coastline where the reef meets the rainforest – one of the only places on earth where two World Heritage areas sit side by side.

World Heritage Rainforest
A full day in the Daintree. This is where the itinerary slows down deliberately. The ecolodge is designed around reconnecting with nature – walks through ancient fern-lined trails, time at the private waterfall swimming hole, the wellness spa, or simply sitting on the deck of your bayan listening to the forest.
The surrounding area offers options too. Guided rainforest walks, wildlife spotting for cassowaries and Boyd’s forest dragons, river cruises for saltwater crocodile sightings, or the chance to visit where the Daintree meets the coast at Cape Tribulation. The indulgence picnic hamper can be enjoyed wherever guests choose.
Trade tip: Two nights at the Daintree Ecolodge works well in this itinerary. It’s a quieter, more contemplative section between the active reef days and the adventure-focused outback days. For clients who want more time in the rainforest, additional nights can be added – just let us know when quoting.

Transfer to the Outback
The journey shifts dramatically. Guests transfer to Mount Mulligan Lodge, located on an entirely private 28,000-hectare outback property 160 kilometres north-west of Cairns. The scheduled helicopter transfer from Cairns takes just 30 minutes, arriving at 2:30pm. Alternatively, private land transfers can be arranged, though the road past Dimbulah is unsealed and a 4WD is required.
Mount Mulligan Lodge accommodates just 20 guests at any one time. The lodge sits in the shadow of majestic Mount Mulligan – a towering sandstone escarpment that dominates the landscape. Each guest room comes with its own electric buggy for zipping between the room, the main pavilion, and the sunset bar. From here, everything is all-inclusive: gourmet meals, premium wines, spirits, beer, and daily outback experiences.
Trade tip: Helicopter transfers to Mt Mulligan are the recommended option, especially during the wet season (January to March) when road closures can occur. Private helicopter charters are also available for groups. Road access is challenging – unless your clients are experienced 4WD drivers, book the helicopter or a private car transfer.

ATV Adventures, Gold Mine & Sunset Bar
A full day exploring the property. The daily experiences at Mt Mulligan are varied and genuinely interesting. Guests can take an ATV adventure through boulder-strewn creeks and outback tracks to The Branch at the southern end of Mount Mulligan for morning tea. There’s a guided tour of the Tyrconnell Gold Mine – the most famous mine on the Hodgkinson goldfield – where much of the infrastructure remains untouched, including a 10-head gold stamper and a sleepy miner’s cottage. In its heyday of the 1930s, around 100 people worked the mine.
The Mount Mulligan township and coal mine tour is compelling in a different way. Now a ghost town abandoned in 1958, the mine is the site of Queensland’s worst mining disaster, which took 75 workers’ lives in 1921. The derelict remains are eerie yet visually arresting. The cemetery tells the story plainly – most headstones dated 19 September 1921.
Late afternoon, head to the rustic Sunset Bar for sundowners as the light changes over the escarpment. Then stargazing after dinner, free from light pollution, using the resident telescope.
Trade tip: The history at Mt Mulligan catches people off guard. Clients expecting a standard luxury outback lodge discover something with real depth. The mining disaster story is handled respectfully and adds a layer to the experience that distinguishes it from other outback properties. The Conde Nast Traveller Hot List 2020 and Departures Magazine 2020 Legend Awards for World’s Best Hotel Views speak for themselves.

Cattle Station, Fishing & Wildlife
Mount Mulligan is a working cattle station, and the property offers a genuine window into outback Australian life. Depending on the season, guests may be able to participate in cattle mustering – ask our reservations team about dates. It’s the real thing, not a performance.
The weir is home to Australian barramundi. Cast a line from the riverbank or a kayak, and a mature barramundi can be brought back to the lodge and prepared by the chef to your liking. Paddle boarding on the weir is another option – guests might be lucky enough to sight a platypus.
The environment around Mount Mulligan supports agile wallabies (often spotted around the lodge), rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, and noisy friar birds. In 2017, a plant species was discovered on Mount Mulligan – and it’s the only place it grows in the world. The naturalist charts available at the lodge help guests identify what they’re seeing.
Trade tip: Mt Mulligan is child-friendly, which opens it up for family bookings. The electric buggies, ATV rides, fishing, and general freedom of the property work well for families with older children. For couples and incentive groups, the intimacy of 20 guests maximum creates a sense of exclusivity that’s hard to replicate.

Farewell & Onward Travel
A final morning at Mt Mulligan. There’s time for an early walk, a last sunrise over the Hodgkinson Valley from The Lookout (a 10 to 15 minute ATV ride along the old railway tracks), or simply a quiet breakfast overlooking the escarpment. The scheduled helicopter departs at 2:35pm, arriving in Cairns at 3:10pm.
From Cairns, we can arrange onward connections to anywhere in Australia – Sydney, Melbourne, Uluru, the east coast, or international departures.
Trade tip: This itinerary pairs naturally with time in Cairns or Port Douglas before or after. For clients building a longer Australian journey, the Reef Rainforest Outback package works as a premium Queensland chapter within a broader national itinerary. We build the full programme – flights, accommodation, touring, and transfers across Australia and New Zealand. Contact us at enquiries@aabh.com.au to discuss how this fits into your clients’ plans.
